Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

A-frame ladder was out during SLAM but fully submerged for a few hours during extra high FC MC levels to address any potential algae that made it inside the tubing. Had not considered this, but I did have heavy rain and stormy conditions for much of three of the last four days after several...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

So weird... FC tested at 27 ppm last night (a little over target of 24 ppm), and still measures 27 ppm as of about 15 minutes ago. Drizzling and overcast all morning, and found pool bottom just as covered with stuff as before--poofs up brown cloud when brushing. If this is algae, is it normal...

Houston, TX No-Shade Pool Owners, how much FC loss

I dilute a sample 10000 to 1 and test dilution for ppm. Learned the technique here in fact!

Pinch-a-Penny chlorine also moves quickly here in South Florida so it's always fresh. Measures consistently above 12% concentration on day of purchase.

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

For the duration of this new SLAM I am definitely back to 24 hour a day pump operation. The stuff poofs up when approached softly with the brush. I understand that usually points to algae? If algae, I don't know if it is dead or still alive--it looked yellowish, much like what I fought off...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

It's been nearly 3 weeks since my last post, during which I complete slam and a 36 hour period of maintaining the extra high FC level recommended for mustard algae. Yes I was being paranoid, but turns out not paranoid enough. That was followed by maintaining a minimum of 9 FC until yesterday...

Liquid Diet question... slightly high pH

I can give you my own anecdotal answer on why the answer is "dear lord in heaven YES they can be". Although, as a supplemental test they will quickly reveal that they are inconsistent and not very accurate, and that neither is the test from the pool store. I'm pretty sure you figured much...

Exact nature of harm from sodium bromide algaecides

I'll go out on a limb and guess that SDS stands for Sanity Destroying System. I thought Skin Destroying System at first because of the silver nitrate and the phosphate super-soap but I suspect the real fun is in the interactions. Can I at least assume that this mixture will not immediately...

Houston, TX No-Shade Pool Owners, how much FC loss

I think the simplest way to describe my issue was doubting I was seeing the dot when it was actually somewhat visible, as a result of blurriness at waist level that could not be addressed well by my regular reading glasses. I would bring the vial closer to my eyes but then try to compensate for...

Houston, TX No-Shade Pool Owners, how much FC loss

I wanted to post on this thread to provide some follow up on my own high levels of daytime loss. Bottom line, I was testing for CYA incorrectly. I thought I understood the process but it took a visit to the Wiki to really understand how subjective this test can be if you are not careful. I had...

Exact nature of harm from sodium bromide algaecides

Wow. So what I am understanding is that compounds sold as Stop Yellow or others based on sodium bromide will, when used in sufficient amounts, effectively rob you of the stabilizing benefit of cyanuric acid by making most of your chlorine go not towards disinfection but rather feeding the...

Exact nature of harm from sodium bromide algaecides

My recent experience going through a SLAM for mustard algae in my above-ground pool made me think about the recommendations against use of any kind of algaecide in the process, and sodium bromide algaecide specifically. Someone stated that applying any bromine to a chlorine pool turns it into...

No weir door to worry about for this Intex AGP, but this removable skimmer does have its share of hard to reach nooks. A trusty old toothbrush is on hand for this. I appreciate the reminder about those flaps; I have in fact been mindful of these. I will dive in and take to those with the...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

Update on progress: In honor our nation's birth and declaration of its intent to blaze its own path forward, my wife declared independence from my suggestions that the pool remain closed for the remainder of this three day weekend. The only acceptable-ish mention of mustard was in response to...

That is consistent with what I have seen today--very clearly gray rather than brownish residue when vacuuming, and a steady reduction in the amount visible. I'll be brushing more frequently throughout the day to keep remaining algae in circulation or pushed to filter intakes as much as...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

Update on SLAM: Brushed walls and floor three times throughout day and evening yesterday. FC never dipped below 18 ppm. This morning FC was actually higher than it was last night. I put the dichlor floater in overnight to counteract overnight loss. Still would have expected some loss instead...

I took a picture of the stuff I keep skimming off the surface of the water, in case this is useful info in confirming a mustard algae problem, or pointing out something else I may be dealing with. When I touch this stuff, it felt neither gritty nor slimy or greasy. It just kind of feel apart...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

I have followed the MA protocol as explained in the pool school (the one posted above), but it mentions nothing about the need to maintain 15% FC/CYA ratio for an extended period of time. Maybe that's why I keep failing. If that's a final piece of the process, I would recommend it be included in...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

In past seasons this was in fact a recurring issue every summer. I was honestly surprised when people would comment on this forum how rare mustard algae was with the TFP method because it seems a nice serving of mustard has always been an ingredient in my pool sandwich. I was hoping a...

Seems you are right about my forum login and my poolmath login not being synced, even though this forum profile seems automatically tied to my Google login when signing in to the app. I tried logging in to the app with just email and pw and it did not recognize my premium subscription though...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

But this is my confusion exactly... is it specific to mustard algae for it to pop up so quickly after a dip in chlorine levels that is still far above the high range of normal FC levels? How have those levels kept my water clear until I installed the skimmer from the shed, and now suddenly FC...

Thought it was mustard, now not so sure

I began SLAM process 5 days ago to address what appears to be mustard algae, but now I wonder if I have misidentified what I have, and have the additional complication of having slacked in frequency of chlorine upkeep due to emergency work time demands since Wednesday. My logs are shared so all...

Houston, TX No-Shade Pool Owners, how much FC loss

I performed and passed OCLT (< .5 loss) last night after about 9 hours, with FC 10.5 at 6 am. FC down to 5 at 8 pm. This is consistent with my daily chlorine use so far this summer. Seems I may be a good candidate for higher CYA levels of 70 or 80. I will report back on my results.

I am reading all this with great interest because I also see 5ppm loss on average between sunup and sundown. This was reduced to about 2.5 ppm avg during the daytime when the last tropical system came though and the sky was overcast all day through. I wonder what effect doing water circulation...

Need some basic advice -TA, pH, CH, FC all things chemical

I'm glad I've started reading this forum more regularly. "Secret vinyl liner recipes" is not information that would have come up in my usual internet surfing. I can't wait to tell my kid that an aspiring pool liner must survive a 2-week battle against a "pink staining organism" with no ill...

This may not be strict scientific method, but I actually performed the experiment as a result of a, shall we say, spirited marital disagreement about the wisdom of slamming vs our old Pool Guy's quick bottle pour approach. Last year had a lot of challenges and one of the things that got set...
