Tool for drain plug on Pentair Cartridge Filter?

That would explain why the socket I keep on my filter wrench is 7/8" :p The Hayward filters use a 3/4" nut, I guess I had a brain fart! Hi Jim, Double brain fart I guess; I didn't realize that wrench was a socket design that stuck out vertically like that; I use a wrench very similar, but...

Tool for drain plug on Pentair Cartridge Filter?

I will add that a dual size ratcheting wrench such as the one below is perfect for Pentair/Sta-Rite FNS+, Clean and Clear Plus, and Quad DE filters. It has both 3/4 for the band clamp nut, and 7/8 for the drain plug...

Swamp treatment regimen improvement requested; question about Sodium Percarbonate and Enzymes (not baq conversion)

Hello All, Pool serviceman in the Tulsa area here, dealing with late openings/pools that have been sitting for a year or more. Advanced apologies for the word wall; I tend towards too much info... One of the hassles of jobs like this is the decaying debris at the bottom of the pool; I cannot...

Anyone have experience with the Riptide XL?

I use my Riptide everyday on my pool route, it has made life so much easier. I am a professional, but don't receive any kind of compensation from the company. At first I was considering getting the Power Vac, but ended up with the riptide and do think it is the better product. I will be honest...

Nautilus DE Filter that needs a manifold, but I don't know my model

It's been a few years since I've regularly repaired DE filters, since they're very uncommon in Tulsa. If I remember correctly there's a slight difference in the Nautilus manifolds and the newer FNS plus manifolds. The proper part number which you should be looking for is Pentair #192193

    Intellichlor IC40 Incorrect Salt Level

Salt meters do not measure salinity directly, but instead measure the conductivity of the water, which changes with total dissolved solids and temperature. Many salt cells do not compensate for the temperature of the water, and as a result can read lower by about 2% per degree below 25C. I'm not...

CYA in salt vs non-salt pools

How does protection of things like heat exchangers, impeller screws, and o-rings factor into it? The guidelines I learned when I started with pools was not to run FC higher than 5 to protect the heater and other components. Is that not actually a concern?

Polaris 280 not moving-All moving parts replaced

Happy to help, sorry to make you feel like I'm going over increasingly basic things; without being there in person and with most of the bases covered I'm having to fall back on even the least likely recommendations. When you spin the turbine by hand, do all wheels turn and does the unit move...

Polaris 280 not moving-All moving parts replaced

Ok, thanks for the followup. None of the wheels should spin freely with little pressure, there should be a moderate amount of resistance on two of the wheels. Turning either the wheel on the right, or the rear wheel should cause both wheels to spin and you should hear a bit of gear noise (the...

CYA in salt vs non-salt pools

Just to clarify, by "running it at 40-50" you are talking about ppm CYA and not the active % on the generator correct? If so, their advice is good for non-salt pools, but the recommended level is higher for the reasons stated above. I'm not 100% on the exact mechanism as to why it is so much...

CYA in salt vs non-salt pools

Some numbers from the field: I have several salt pools that I service weekly, and can tell a huuuge difference in ease of maintaining adequate FC levels between 30-50ppm and 70-80ppm CYA. Our IC40s need to be run close to 80-90% with the lower CYA range, and even that isn't adequate, with...

    DE filter replacement help

I'm not a huge fan of sand filters, but they aren't 'bad'. As long as your system is designed well enough to function well with the flow reductions caused by sand filters vs the others you should be good. I generally think they are the worst choice though. Besides the flow restriction, if any...

Polaris 280 not moving-All moving parts replaced

I hate to ask such a rudimentary question, and please don't take offense, but is the Cleaner Booster Pump running when you are testing the 280? Without the CBP, there is not enough water pressure to run the cleaner. As long as you are getting adequate flow through the hose that connects to the...

    CSI in winter (Fiberglass)

I let the pH rise to 7.8 in the winter. Or raise the TA. Depending on how much rain you get, you can also raise the CH to 300-350 if the spring rains will flush it out. I generally have to add Calcium Chloride to most of my pools in the spring and fall here in Tulsa to get them back up to spec...

    Backwash hose question

I worked for a pool company in Dallas for a few years, and am up in Tulsa now. I wish we plumbed B/W lines to sewer here, the vast majority are just hoses into the yard. To answer OPs question: What kind of hose are you using? I use backwash hoses on 10 pools a week and none of them have ever...

New pool One month later disappointed with plaster

    New Polaris 280 Turning Slow

ajw is asking good questions (as always it seems). How is the flow to the rest of the Polaris? (Debris tube, tail whip, etc) Assuming a functioning booster pump, check the restrictor plate. Also, while unit is on, raise each hose swivel above the water and check for drips or sprays, they may...

Spa draining when pump shuts off for the day

If the check valve indicated is functioning correctly, the only other possibility I can see is that the return diverter valve is letting water through to the pool. Is the spa or pool above the equipment pad at all? If not, its an easy thing to disassemble that valve and check the diverter seal.

    Cya/hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite interaction.

Quote taken from the thread Chlorine after cya bond is released If I am understanding correctly, the chlorine atom bonded to the CYA molecule is neither hypochlorous acid nor hypochlorite ion. James gives an excellent formula and chart for the ratio of HCLO to CLO- given pH when CYA is not...

Longest SLAM I’ve ever done.. still cloudy

Sorry for the delay. What I was taught and my experience is that pulling water from the bottom of the pool, or 70/30 MD/Skimmers clears the pool up faster than leaving everything open or pooling entirely from the skimmer. How's the chlorine demand now?

Longest SLAM I’ve ever done.. still cloudy

A couple things: The first; do you have a main drain in the bottom of the pool? Isolating suction to that will help clear up the pool faster. How much is your chlorine falling overnight?

    Introduction from a Pool Professional
