BBB, Salt, and relevance to bearings?

Apologies for the incorrect terminology. What I meant was a salt water specific seals. Something like this: Saltwater Tune Up Kit Hayward Super Pump - GOKIT3SALT - INYOPools.com Perhaps this is snake oil and an o-ring is an o-ring? Update: it's been a few more months with the existing Hayward...

BBB, Salt, and relevance to bearings?

Background: Many years ago I gave up on chlorine pucks and switched to liquid chlorine (BBB) to keep the CYA in check (amongst other things). I've noticed the water tasting more and more salty. I assume as the sodium builds up from the liquid chlorine. Question: Is there a point that using...

Squeal from Hayward EcoStar Variable Speed, help!

6 years ago I had a Hayward EcoStar variable speed pump (SP3400VSP) put in. Its starting to rattle and squeal and I suspect the bearings are going. From what I understand it is difficult to repair a variable speed motor and you are better off replacing the motor… and if reviews are any...

    Drip edge on waterfall/spillover?

Judging from the pictures around here this type of spillover is pretty common. Do others not have this problem? If so, do you know why? Is there a better section to post in than this one?

    Drip edge on waterfall/spillover?

Good idea thank you. The picture below shows the spill over and the edge where the water collections and grows algae.

    Drip edge on waterfall/spillover?

I have a pool with a hot tub slightly raised from the pool. The spa "spills over" into the pool forming a waterfall. The problem is there is no drip edge so I find a good amount of water clings to the bottom of the spill way and runs down the hot tub siding... the grout in this area slowly being...

    High CYA: Draining advice

It looks exactly like the two drains on the floor of the deep end. I do have a second pump for a water feature. Makes sense it would be for that now that you mention it.

    High CYA: Draining advice

Drain is in progress. Started with the filter set to waste and a backwash hose but it was making a big mess. I am using a hose hooked up to the spigot on the pump and moving the hose around the yard. Much slower but is controllable. Pool level is just starting to get under the return jets. I...

    High CYA: Draining advice

Unless I hear otherwise from the excellent people on this forum I would like to drain (and not do something stupid in the process =) ). If I can't do it all in one go, should I try to maintain the water clear? Is that going to be possible once the pool is near empty? I will see if I can find...

    High CYA: Draining advice

Hi All, Been having trouble with my puck fed pool and algae blooms. Algae was growing on floor particularly around edges. Shocked and shocked and couldnt get pool to stay clean. Brushing bottom would bring up grey looking dust. Went to pool store and tried some bromine but a week later and the...

UltraPure ozonator with burnt out bulbs

I haven't measured CYA in a while... last reading was from last year and was 100 so I bet it is pretty high. That being said when the ozonator was connected (pump side) I had no issues keeping the pool clean even with < 1 FC. Looks like I have some Pool School reading to do.

UltraPure ozonator with burnt out bulbs

I don't recall how they were wired in and don't have pictures. As you probably know its a pain to take apart so I can't take a new picture. Maybe google can help? Otherwise you could try taking a picture and post it here. There are quite a few people very knowledgeable in electronics on this...

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

Simple, but not cheap... sure is nice to have the pool swimmable though. =) Opted for another single speed as installer claimed it would be a lot more work to install a two speed. Perhaps he was referring to installing the switch?

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

Motor died... probably from being submerged for a short time during the heavy rain. =( Replaced motor and now all is good! Thanks for the help everyone!

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

I haven't considered replacing the motor but I will now. Wanted to run out operator error before going that route. =) Thanks for the advice everyone. I am going to have someone take a look at the motor and will report back.

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

You have it correct. The pump starts OK, starts pulling water into the basket (but still mostly air), starts slow down until there is just a hum, and then clicks off despite the controls still sending it voltage. The motor casing also gets hot to the touch. Pump basket is empty (clean)...

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

When the controls change the valves I can see the handle moving until it hits its desired position. The valves have not changed position since I took that picture (besides my manual experiment with the hose). Could I try running the pump with the cover off to see if it spins? Or is that going...

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

Spa mode has the same issue (and similar sound). I just stuck a garden hose with wet towel into the line on the pump side and closed all valves and had the water back up into the pump... then opened one valve at a time and watched the water go back down. Seems like water is able to flow...

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

Given that the valves are open and there are several suction lines available does it still seem possible this is a suction line clog? I will try to stick a garden hose in the line on the pump side to see if that helps. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

Interesting about the valves.... After the rain stopped and the pump started working I was backwashing the system and accidentally set one of the controls from pool/spa/spillover to spillover and the valves started switching... and I immediately set it back to pool but perhaps the valves didn't...

Hayward pump hums then stops after long rain

This week we had a crazy amount of rain. The area of my yard where the pool equipment is was flooded due to heavy rain in a short period. I heard the pump trying to come on and then going off about 10 seconds later. I turned off the breaker and let it rest until the area was more dry and then...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

The electrician came out this morning and rearranged the breakers so that the two new circuits are on different phases (the circuits that share the same neutral). He did the same for the pool circuits and tied the switches together with a pin. Now everything is working and should pass...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

Wow, thank you everyone for the great advice. The work is being done by a sub contractor. I called the general and he is going to send a real electrician to fix it. Again thanks so much for the help!

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

In the current setup (from the picture) I know the breakers above and below the pool breakers are new. I do not know what the configuration was before the work was done. I can ask. Is the breaker type wrong or is the placement wrong, or both? Perhaps this information is enough to have him fix...

Main breaker worked on, now pump wont turn on

Thanks for the response adelman! - I am North American (Austin, TX) - I don't know if the pump is wired for 230V or not. How can I tell? - In the main breaker box there are two breakers that go to the pool but no they are not tied together with a bar (see picture) - In the pool controls box...
