Well, I might have found one of my problems. I was getting inconsistent test results for CYA which indicated 30-40 one day and zero within a couple weeks. Today I was going to test and realized I had run out of reagent. Bought some new. Tested it and now level is at 100. I was adding CYA...

By auto fill, you mean something that automatically replaces water? If so, no, I don't, but I watch this pretty regularly. I brush after every meal...oh, wait...sorry, he he. I rely on Dolphin cleaner to do this, it climbs the walls and seems to do really good job at cleaning almost...

One other question...lol well, for now anyway...is it ok to use a FC level of 10 on a routine basis? As I mentioned in first post, it seems that my pool struggles to keep algae out and I've found that keeping FC 2 -8 as recommended here, doesn't seem to be enough.

Ok, makes sense, guess I'll have to test CYA as often as FC and maintain it. Thx. Related question. I thought CYA level was something that was pretty stable and immune to wild swings in value. Is it unusual for it to go from 30-50 to 0 in a matter of a month or so?

Not sure what I'm not doing wrong. Had cloudy, algae caused problem months ago. Shocked it. Fixed problem and returned to crystal clear. But, even though I kept the chlorine level within 2-8 over next week and a half, algae came back. Repeated the process but problem returned within a week...

Thanks for all the help. Update. We had a big rain the other night, pool almost overflowed. Ph now at 7.4. I love it when things resolve themselves but learned the lesson of adding CYA slower next time.

yea, I think you're right. it wasn't zero to begin with, test only goes to 30, I made the bad assumption it was zero. would have been smarter to only use 4 lbs CYA, wait a week and retest. looked at your link, I do this correctly. it's just hard sometimes to see when the black dot...

ph in the hot tub always seems to rise and I control it, but ran out of 'ph down' late one night and really wanted to get in. was just curious, is it dangerous to your body to sit in a hot tub with a ph of 8.0?

Ok, sorry, didn't make the connection of dichlor being CYA and good point, I'll check it with other tests. When I refilled spa I used pool water and was assuming water came with the same CYA % in the pool...which is ~ 45 ppm. I have noticed that pH level needs attention more frequently than...

Uhm....I am using bleach but don't know what the 'dichlor-then-bleach' method is...is that addressed in pool school?

Looked around the site and can't find info on chlorine shock levels for the spa. Are there some posts somewhere I can read? Water is cloudy and trying to figure out the cause but thought it best to shock it first but not sure what the correct amount of bleach to use.
