Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024 Monday.

We have been working on solar photos with our Celestron 8SE, solar filter and canon mirrorless camera in preparation for the eclipse. Got some good sunspot pics. We've been excited for this one since the last one.

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024 Monday.

We drove to a great spot north of Charleston for the last one. We're pulling the camper to Arkansas for this one!

What happened to the poolside paradise topic?

I thought it was its own topic. Is it subtopic somewhere?

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

One thought on that (moot now. SLAM is done, pool is great).... If I don't run SLAM level water through the spa jets, couldn't algae lurk there? I spent most of the SLAM with pool and spa together, but I'm kind of glad I spent some time running the high chlorine levels through the spa jets, too.

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Good news, bad news (well, mostly good 😁).. despite all the rain we had, FC is drifting down really slowly (like .5 per day). So I won't have a lot of time to dial in the SWG before we leave for 5 days next week. I'll probably set it to raise FC by 1 ppm per day while we're gone if the daily...

    Dolphin S50 swivel cable?

I can't believe they can't fix the programming so that the bot turns one and then the other. We just replaced our dead A20 and ran it a lot (SLAMing). Dang if the cable wasn't twisted already. sigh

Using solar panels as UV meters

I'm dialing in my SWG, and coincidentally was looking at the solar energy app. It maps the electricity produced every day, which should be closely correlated to UV. I'm thinking of putting the data into a spreadsheet and using it to help keep the SWG dialed in. Has anyone done this?

Florida folks - what's your daily chlorine loss these days?

Everything except pH tested. I tested the pH, too, but don't trust it. I'm going to keep the SWG off until I'm near 10. I'll retest pH then, too.

Florida folks - what's your daily chlorine loss these days?

I wasn't doing an SWG slam. My CYA had dropped to 30 🙄, so SLAM was 12. It'll drift down to 10 pretty fast! Guess it's time to put on my fuzzy crocs and go get a sample.

Florida folks - what's your daily chlorine loss these days?

I'm just getting everything going after a SLAM (first one ever, blaming the holidays). I added CYA yesterday, will do a full test in a bit. I need to get my SWG going again, and need some initial target numbers for percentage and run time. I'm targeting CYA of 70. I'm going to let the FC drift...

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Passed OCLT, crystal clear, no visible algae, dead or alive. I'm ending the SLAM. Not quite back to normal routine yet. I just added 4 pounds of CYA (sock method, now fully dissolved), so am running the filter on high overnight to get it mixed in well. Will do a full test tomorrow. I need to get...

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

If the sun ever comes out I won't be surprised to see TFP sparkle! Fingers crossed. (Still holding SLAM until we pass OCLT.)

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Well, given the pouring rain and some questionable test results I'm holding at SLAM levels one more day. Pool looks (from what I can tell) crystal clear, but a whole lot of dirt and pollen are coming in through the screen with the rain drops (as evidenced from the hairnet in the skimmer) and I...

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Yes! Pool looks great. Really clear. Filter needs to be cleaned (will do that when it warms up this afternoon). O CCs. Chlorine seems to be holding, but will hold the SLAM and do an OCLT tonight to confirm. Fingers crossed... this SLAM may be coming to an end!

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

The pool solar cover is going to get washed and put away until early spring. We'll clean the spa cover before putting it back on the spa. This time of year we only use the spa. Living in Florida we seem to be the exception to the "CYA never goes away unless you drain" rule, but I try not to...

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Update: Passed OCLT. Pool is clear. Robot arrives today to vacuum the last of the dead algae. (I'll brush and help). I'm holding the SLAM until all the criteria are met. Then I'll add CYA to the recommended level, get everything else balanced, and dial in the SWG to hold FC just above the TFP...

Why Can't you use SWG for SLAM?

I generally run our FC "hot" as well. Until the recent issue, I hadn't added LC since.... early last spring, maybe? Given that our storage area get pretty warm, I figured LC would go bad before I used it. With this cold weather SLAM, I haven't gone through 4 gallons of the 6 we picked up on...

Why Can't you use SWG for SLAM?

Yes, I've definitely been appreciating the cold temps and cloudy days as I deal with my green pool. I never want to have to do this in the summer time!

Why Can't you use SWG for SLAM?

I'm SLAMming right now. Turned off SWG and adding LC per TFP SLAM guidance. That said, I could tell I had algae around Christmas. I didn't have the time or supplies to do a SLAM. I did a few days of Superchlorinate, and I believe it kept things at bay. Unlike other SLAMs I've read about here...

Well, here goes my first SLAM!

Getting there! (Don't worry, I know I'm not done. 😁) Pool is holding chlorine above SLAM level, no CCs, clearing up and getting back to its normal color. It's cold here today (for this Florida gal), so not sure that scrubbing and vacuuming will take place today especially with our new robot...
