    Mastertemp overheating issue

I have to admit I'm not sure what this means. The gas contractor is coming out next week to test things soon though, so I'll hopefully ask the right questions.

    Mastertemp overheating issue

I've done some maintenance this week to clean things up a bit and get things back in order. I've gotten my phosphates down to ~ 300 ppb now and will get them down further. pH is on the lower end and I'm going to hover there (7.2) for a bit as I found scale deposits at the bottom of my pool...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Since the whine is present, mostly (manual does mention this is a too-rich mixture) I'll go with that. I'll call the guys that ran my gas line and hooked up the heater initially. I also noticed I smell gas for about 2 seconds when it fires and shuts off (possible valve leak?) What phosphate...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

JamesW, I'll check that next time I'm outside. I don't have the personal test kit yet, but I did talk to a Pentair rep that wanted me to get current good readings on chemical balance. I took another sample to the store. they use a system called "ClearCare" where the vials are inserted into a...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Sorry - 7" water column. I'll open another warranty case; the unit may need some adjustments. None were needed on the original unit (pool didn't have any water when it was originally installed last year - it simply worked, but I never checked the SFS temp as I didn't have a reason to). I did...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

I may be able to rule out flow and exhaust. Filter pressure is 18psi at the high pump speed, which is what everyone is telling me to run at with the heater going (vs. low where the pressure is at about 5psi). The jet at the return is fairly strong and I can feel the difference in temperature...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

JamesW: Answers inline: Have you verified the gas pressure? - 7lb static pressure with a drop of 1.5 when the heater is firing. Limits are 4-14 according to Pentair. Can you describe the gas supply? - Meter has 250k capacity. There is a 1x1x1 tee splitting off the run for the pool...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

I figured I should chime in with an update on this issue. I decided not to replace any parts on my own since the service company was coming out to work on the issue. I'll jump to the end of the story - they replaced the heater under warranty from Pentair. Now for the sad part - after 2 days...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Yes, I found the sensor on Amazon for $21. I did ask the tech that came out to confirm the actual temp and he supposedly did, but I agree that's an easy fix. For the rest, I think i'd rather that the warranty guy replace all of that since it would be covered by Pentair. Edit: I assume the...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

I'm going to try to remove the regulator. I fired it up last evening after taking the pics I sent, and it made a strange noise after firing. I've heard it before but it doesn't last and it's not frequent. I decided to try to find out what it could be, and came across this video: I can't...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Here are some pics. The design is of course slightly different vs the 400 Exit, inlet and overall. I do see the spring mechanism inside the inlet just not sure how to get to it. I can push the valve (assuming that’s the bypass) in to the right with minor effort.

    Mastertemp overheating issue

I don’t disagree with your comments amount the tests I do currently. I have read the chemical guides before and have most of the data, except probably what you are looking for. I figured once I was comfortable enough with my knowledge I could do the proper tests myself. I acknowledge that I...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Thanks JamesW, I answered some of those in a an edit to my reply above before you asked them. I have not checked the LEDs yet - I am not overly comfortable disassembling the unit in any way, but it is apparent I will need to do this as a part of normal maintenance so I'll have to fire it up and...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Here is a picture of the system. I will include recent chemical readings as well. Answers below. I use the test kit that came with the chlorine/chemicals (Frog). They are standard test strips. I also take a water sample up to the pool store where they use a computerized system to read the...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Thank you - sorry for the lack of replies. Shortly after my initial post I went out of town for a few days. I did talk to a Pentair representative today and he basically said the same things concerning two possible causes: calcification (chemical) and a poor burn (low pressure, mixture). I...

    Mastertemp overheating issue

Hello all, I'll try to make this brief as it's been a strange six week ordeal with my heater, but after 4 tech visits and a lot of "opinions", I am beginning the question the help I'm getting. I may say a few things incorrectly as I am still learning how heaters work and the proper terms...

New AGP - Backfill / Settling

Hello all - first post. I've been reading for a bit here over the last few weeks, while I've been working on getting my new pool ready. I have a quick question about backfill and timing an some slight settling. My pool is a 30 x 15' oval with 5 steel buttresses on each side for extra support...
