    Freezing temperature prep

Do you have freeze protection to turn on your pump when Temps get low? This will be the 5th winter I've had a pool and I've never closed, nor had any problems. My equipment is in a pump house that stays fairly warm, but I do worry a bit more since the big freeze in Texas! I know a lot of people...

Deep end built too shallow (2 feet off, Gunite); what are our options going to be?

I would make them fix it. Two feet is a huge difference. There is nothing the grandson and I love better than diving down and swimming around the bottom of the pool. I only went 6 feet deep, that was a mistake. If you wanted 8, I don't think you'll be happy.

    Fluctuating chlorine level

I run mine just high enough to let the swg work, 1200 rpm, and let it run round the clock. I keep this schedule year round since though it gets too cold to swim, the pool stays open through the winter. When the swg stops working due to cold Temps, I add chlorine manually, but don't need much in...

I have green algae and shocked the pool Friday. Today (Sunday), i have this - white stuff on the top of the pool. Thoughts?

Well, it seems obvious that your salt water chlorine generator is not creating enough chlorine to overcome the algae, so, yes, add more to keep it at bay until you can test properly.

How likely are pets (cats) to suffer salt poisoning?

The only thing salt will do is make them retain water, am I right ladies?

    Pool closing in Atlanta, GA

I'm in the north Atlanta suburbs. I've never closed. When the leaves fall, I scoop them out for about 3 weeks and empty the skimmer baskets daily. After that the only thing in there are wolf spiders so i tend to not check them more than once a week. I don't run my robot again until spring. As...

Do pets ever track algae into pools?

Dept, everyone has you well covered on the topic of eradicating algae. I'm gonna weigh in to say I have 5 indoor cats currently. I tend a colony of 12 ferals who decided to live on my back porch 12 years ago, they drink out of the (salt) pool every day. I haven't ever had algae, and all of the...

Fine Green/Brown Powder in Bromine Pool

Welcome to TFP. That looks like algae. Do you have one of the test kits that TFP uses to make recommendations? The TF100 from tftestkits.net or the Taylor K2006C, available from Amazon. With one of those kits in hand, you can perform an overnight chlorine loss test. If you lose more than 1ppm...

Lots of suspended particles in the water

Hi Dannym, I think most of us are pretty busy with work, family etc. Home testing takes literally 10 minutes. Much less time than running to the pool store. There is no need to shut your pool down for 4 days, as long as your chlorine in between minimum and slam level for your CYA, you can...

Comparative Test in the TF-Pro Kit Question

I just dump the residual, on the ground and rinse the test tube with pool water. About once a month, ill clean them with rubbing alcohol. For the little spoon, I usually just let it swirl in the speed stir, then take it out and do the test. That gets off any clinging powder

    Signature Matrix Tahoe

Yes, the plaster color changed noticeably once the chemicals were balanced. I want to say a couple of weeks till it showed the true color. It is a blue green though and changes shading throughout the day.

Comparative Test in the TF-Pro Kit Question

Basically no one uses the comparator for chlorine. The powder test is so much more accurate, why would you guess with the block?

Taylor sample sizer. Unnecessary and love it

One of the best pieces of advice I ever read on TFP: get a long piece of skinny pvc, plug it with your thumb, get your water sample from the appropriate depth, release your thumb to get the water, plug it again. I use that method to fill my measuring cup then run all my samples Inside. Warm and dry!

I'm sorry you can't make pool math work. I attached a screen shot of effects of adding powder dichlor just to give you an idea of what it will do to FC and CYA in a 24000 gal pool.

    Muriatic vs Sulphuric Acid

Of course not, and you shouldn't. I am not versed in what it might do or not to the cell. Just pointing out that many if not most people here us muriatic without issue to salt cells. I'm sure one of our science guys will weigh in here.

    Ozone with or without saltwater

Kuddos to you for taking control of your pool! Do you have, or can you download the poolmath app? It can help you determine how much solid chlorine, with cya, to add to your pool to increase your CYA enough to protect your chlorine. When adding the solid chlorine, you would need to adjust or...

    Muriatic vs Sulphuric Acid

TFP recommends muriatic for reducing PH. Most pool maintenance companies here in the U.S. also use muriatic for PH control. Sulfuric acid is stronger and has more health risks.

    Ozone with or without saltwater

Hello rteen, I see you are in Turkey, are you able to get one of the test kits that TFP recommends? I know outside the U.S. the kits can be difficult if not impossible to find. It will be very hard to manage your pool the TFP way without fas-dpd at least, to manage the higher chlorine levels.

    Another Algae or Dirt Thread

I am late weighing in, but does your robot pick it up? I get a gritty sand from my coping in my dolphin when I run it. You can definately pinch it and it is very gritty, like coarse sand. Does your coping look like mine? You're not far from me so it may be the same material. I know your already...

    Green, swampy pool

I should ask first, how are you testing? You will need either a K2006C from amazon or a TF100 or TF pro from tftestkits.net. Using one of those kits you can slam. Have you read all the slam process? SLAM - Shock Level and Maintain When you start the slam it is best to check chlorine...
