    Time for new.....everything! Help!

Bought a home 3 years ago with a pool. Thanks to TFP, have the chemistry down. But everything is old, so it's time to prioritize. Looking to see if any of you have questions I should be asking, things to consider, etc. And, of course, ballpark prices. 1) Liner. Not horrible but some fading/...

    Closing- Too much FC??

Thanks, I can see how that would work. I don't have any floaters or pucks, so it would be easier and less expensive for me to just dump in an extra jug or two of chlorine, if that would accomplish the same thing?

    Closing- Too much FC??

Closing my pool for the 3rd time. First 2 years I used poly 60, once it was clear at opening, the other time somewhat green. So I've decided to ditch it this year. For $30, I figure I'll just SLAM to close, and honestly I will probably SLAM at opening no matter what anyhow. Question is, if...

    Can FC be TOO high?

So, based on my CYA of 40, my FC should be 5-7. We rarely use the pool during the week, so is there any downside to keeping it at 7-9 just as a precaution? Then let it drift down a little more during the weekend? Doesn't cost any more, as I thought it through. Once you're at a level, you add...

    Pool Closing-When to slam ?

Ok, but then I don't understand why I would slam at all if using algaecide 60. Why not just keep chlorine level low? I guess that's the part I don't get.

Help with 1st time SLAM, cloudy water just wont clear!!!

If you scroll down a bit, I just went through this. I'll let the experts chime in, but here's what I learned. Read how to slam in pool school and follow it exactly. That means FC always needs to be above minimum spam level, and keep pump running the entire time. As I learned, it will stay...

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

That was my pool all summer 3-4 months. Backwashed once a month maybe, as pressure was always the same. Then we got massive rains coupled with leaving solar cover on for days, equals algae I guess. Hot, humid, wet. So, yes, was adding de and backwashing several times a day after that...

    Pool Closing-When to slam ?

Thanks, it is confusing though. So I would slam, even though it doesnt need to be slammed, drift fc down under 5ppm, then add polly 60? Not sure why I'm slamming if I have to bring it all the way down again. So then for 6 months it's just the alagaecide in there all winter and very little chlorine?

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

Thank you Mark, I think I have it figured out as water is back to clear, 0 cc, and passed Oclt. So I'm assuming what I thought was dirt was actually dead algae and the cloudiness was live algae? Rookie mistake called cockiness, lol. Did not do oclt after my original slam, it was clear so got...

    Pool Closing-When to slam ?

I have seen several pros here say they slam a few days before closing and let it drift down? Why? Seems like slamming the day you close would have maximum benefit for the whole off season? So I'm curious about what I'm missing.

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

I'm at a loss. Not sure if its algae or not, and if it is not sure if it's dead. A bit of research it MAY be mustard algae if its algae at all. Brownish yellow dust on pool floor. But I have never let FC drop below minimum, so in theory I shouldn't have any. I have vacuumed to waste 3 times...

    Adding cya

Thank you both. So I would run the pump until it's gone, then another 24 hours? Or once it's all gone I can go back to my shutdown schedule?
  13. F

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

True, put this wasnt/ isn't algae. Just a bunch of dirt and who knows what that blew in during a storm.

    Adding cya

I've read about how to add cya, but quick question. I always have a skimmer sock in my skimmer. So could I just dump the cya into my skimmer, since a sock is in there already? Wouldn't that be the same thing as dumping in a cotton athletic sock?

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

Thanks, impatient here. It is slowly improving. Vacuum and brush every day, de anf backwash 3 times a time, and have let my pump run 16 hours a day instead of 10-12. Let in run 24 hours one day. I'm just used to the instant results of slam, spoiled. I do feel there must be something out there...

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

Fine dust on the floor now. Vacuum to waste caught some, but just moved most of it around. What now? I know clarified is a dirty word around here, but ready to try anything. Slime bag?

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

So I let it settle again, vacuum to waste. Still like 90/95% clear. Blue, but just has a bit of milky haze. So I backwash and added more DE. Only took 1/4 cup for pressure to rise 1. Just like the first time I used DE. That was at 6:00, now 10:30 and pressure has gone from 17 to 25. I know...

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

Yes, same issue with the DE. Pressure rises rapidly. Not sure I'm doing it right though, is pressure rising due to amount of de I'm adding is too much, or is it collecting debris right away causing it to go up. And could the filter just pass it right through back into water? Not sure if that's...

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

So I tried adding DE, only took a little over 1/4 cup for pressure to rise by 1. However, it then quickly went up 8-10. Backwashed, did it again with same result. Only took 15-30 minutes. Problem is, At this rate I would be doing this all day long, maybe for several days? Just not practical...

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

I just got done slamming Figured it cant hurt, worst case I don't need to add chlorine for a while. If that doesn't work I will shut down the pump for a full day and see if everything settles to the bottom.

    Cloudy but chemistry is balanced

FC 8.0 CC 0 CYA 50 PH 7.4 TA 80 Water is not green, just cloudy. Has been crystal clear all season until now. We've had a ton of rain lately so thinking that may be the cause? Not losing FC overnight, so really confused why its cloudy and if slamming is the answer? Also backwashed filter, not...

    FC lost with solar cover??

From what I've read here, FC loss is due to sunlight? I'm curious why I'm losing at least 1.0 every day when I have solar cover on 24/7? All other chemistry is good, only thing I never know is CYA because I'm still not sure about the dot.

    Rain....lots of rain. Now what?

Preparing for the morning after a lot of rain lately. I know I need to do the following. Turn the pump on, test, add chemicals as needed, scrub walls, vacuum, lower water level by either backwash and/or draining. Question I have, in what order do I do these things???
  24. F

    PH Test color change??

FC 7 CC 0 TA 90 CYA 50 I'm sure I mixed it very well, or so I thought.
  25. F

    PH Test color change??

Tested PH today, clearly 7.4. Great. But set it down and after maybe 30-60 seconds turned 8.0+ red. What the heck? Do I trust the immediate color, or use the color after waiting a while?

Where do I go from here?

Thanks for everyone's input so far. Good to know about pucks in the skimmer, I'm going to wait until this last one is gone and I think I'll stop using them, hopefully CYA will be close enough to 40. I won't touch anything else other than adding liquid chlorine as needed, and see what I get for...

Where do I go from here?

Pool has been open for about 3 weeks. Shocked at open, crystal clear ever since and have used in 5-6 days already. (Quite a treat for May in Wisconsin.) Here are my readings: FC: 7.0 CC: 0.0 PH: 7.2 TA: 95-100 CH: 300 CYA: 35? (I can still barely see the dot around 35-40 if I move it around...

Thank you both! (And yes, I meant .5) Now all I need is sunshine.

How can I lower CC to 0.00?

First time pool owner, and this site has helped me greatly! I see all the ways to raise and lower levels for everything accept CC. I'm getting a reading of .05, is there any way to get this to .00 without shocking? All my other readings are dialed in. Is it possible for CC to go down to .00...
