Botched a patch on the bottom of the liner... now what??

Yeah, a balloon was just a concept sketch in my mind. The zip top bag idea also has merit. I think I can hack something together. Without jumping in it's difficult to tell how firm that area is. We get a lot of mole traffic which creates canyons and divots on its own but this is the first time...

Botched a patch on the bottom of the liner... now what??

Thanks for the suggestions, but there is a complication. The hole is in a "bowl" in the liner so a flat object won't work. We need something dense and durable enough to be lowered and raised in the water, but also conformal so it makes even contact with the irregularity of the floor. I'm...

Botched a patch on the bottom of the liner... now what??

A few weeks, maybe a month ago, we noticed significant water loss (about an inch a day) and by using some food coloring I was able to identify a pinhole leak near the edge of the floor. At that point the water was already too cold to dive or even swim in, so I figured out what I thought was a...

Why Isn't My Filter Filtering? >:(

Update: It's looking great now. The effluent from the filter backwash today was more of an olive green color; maybe the silt/sediment just looked brown against the medium blue hue of the pool liner? Either way, lesson learned! Thanks again for steering me straight.

Why Isn't My Filter Filtering? >:(

Thanks for the input. I am all too familiar with the SLAM process, thanks to what it took to open the pool the first season we lived here... I'll keep the chlorine up and see how things go. On a side note about the filter, there's some variance in the clean pressure. I've seen it as low as 8...

Why Isn't My Filter Filtering? >:(

Yikes, OK. I'm pretty sure I've been keeping it above 3 most of the time, but once I figured out how much of a chlorine dose it needed every day I only checked the FC about once a week, so there may have been some variation towards the low end that went under the radar. I also figured a CC of 0...

Why Isn't My Filter Filtering? >:(

I'm presuming it's some kind of airborne contaminant/dirt that's precipitating into the pool but I'm honestly not sure how to test for what it actually is. To my eyes it does not have the same appearance as algae. The chlorine has not dropped to 0 all season, including the last few weeks. Test...

Why Isn't My Filter Filtering? >:(

Making a long backstory short, filtration has been an issue since we opened the pool for the first time four seasons ago. Some of the equipment was inherited from the previous owners of the house, and almost all of the functional parts have been replaced since then, including the MPV, sand, and...

Does the MPV/spider gasket really need to be removed when closing if the valve has a Winter position?

Previously I've been lax when closing so I'm trying to do things more correctly this time around. The Pool School closing procedure mentions removing the spider gasket; I would assume this is to prevent freeze damage if the valve doesn't drain completely? The last couple seasons just putting the...

Air coming out of thin water?

Well, there is no external water leak, so I don't think dye is going to work. . If the problem is the outer gasket, it's only leaking under vacuum. And at this point, I think I'm going to live with it for the season and wait until after closing to replace it. I do both of those, every time. I...

Air coming out of thin water?

Hmm, testing for a suction side leak is a good idea if I can figure out how to do it. The vacuum port passage is pretty well buried below the weir opening. Maybe an exploded parts diagram will help visualize. Going back to the filter, I was thinking that the combination of aeration and...

Air coming out of thin water?

I'm not using a swivel, and the skimmer plate is completely submerged inside the skimmer. The only thing I can think of that could be a potential air leak is the outer skimmer gasket. I will have to check again if the adapter will connect up with the skimmer outlet. My recollection is that it...

Air coming out of thin water?

Sorry, yes, I am using a skimmer plate and the hose is connected to the vacuum port of the skimmer. As for the aeration, I mean air will accumulate under the skimmer plate over the course of vacuuming, and after a certain point (water level drops below the vacuum port) the water aerates in the...

Air coming out of thin water?

Alright, time to revisit this. Since last year, I've downsized the pump and replaced the filter sand. The skimmer still gets aerated to the point that it affects function after about 10 minutes of vacuuming, and the cloud of nastiness still comes out of the return after I pause and restart the...

Finding strange things in the pool

Found this moth, still alive, in the skimmer basket. By far the biggest one I've seen since we moved here.

    Cats & pool water

Looks like we've been chosen by a local stray. Problem is, he doesn't like the clean water we leave out for him, but he will readily drink out of the vegetable planters and the pool. Is there any long-term adverse effect to him doing this? We use chlorine and I'm pretty good about keeping the...

Said goodbye to Zeo Ruby Sand today

After three years of good-but-not-great filtering, I finally changed out the Zeo for Mystic White. My biggest problem with Zeo was the red/brown sediment patches that just would not go away; no matter how much brushing or vacuuming I did, they always came back in a day or so. I also found the...

    Glycerin Filled Gauge

I don't think the glycerin makes a difference. I mounted mine on a short pipe nipple with a 45° fitting to make it easier to view and help water drain away from the gauge when the system is off, but that was a personal preference.

Century 2 speed motor stuttering when starting on high speed

The replacement motor was scheduled to arrive tomorrow, but yesterday the package tracking info said it was going to arrive early so I disassembled the pump to have it ready ahead of time. Turns out the tracking info was a lie, so rather than have the pump down an extra day (or more) I figured I...

    New Hayward 2speed Issue

Looks like your video links might not have come through. They're not showing up for me, at least.

Century 2 speed motor stuttering when starting on high speed

Update: it took about a week and two support cases but they approved a replacement motor under warranty. I'll probably take the defective one apart as a postmortem to see if I can figure out what happened. Slightly off-topic question, is the mechanical seal single use only? Should I replace it...

Century 2 speed motor stuttering when starting on high speed

Agreed, thanks for the input. I'm still waiting to hear back from Inyo; at this point I'm not expecting anything until Monday at the earliest.

Century 2 speed motor stuttering when starting on high speed

Yep, low speed works perfectly. The switch came separately with the new motor, and the cord was reused from the old motor. The hot is connected to the open spade on the switch, I just had it pulled off to get a better angle.

Century 2 speed motor stuttering when starting on high speed

At first I thought I wired it wrong, too, but it all checks out. Voltage is good, over 110V when it's chattering and right at 110V once it's actually up to speed on high. Just for sake of argument, I doubled up the conductors from the breaker panel with a spare wire to rule out brief voltage...
