    Algae or pollen?

Thanks for everyone's time. I took duraleigh's advice and kicked my FC up to 10. Solved the issue inside of a day. Just waiting to see if anything returns, but at least I know now that it's not growing in the pool, it's falling in.

    Algae or pollen?

Thanks a lot for the reply. Do you think I should just watch it for a few more days to see what happens, or take the better-safe-than-sorry approach and SLAM? I appreciate your time.

    Ideal bleach date code?

Hey there. I have a question about bleach date codes. What is the ideal date range for bleach that I purchase, and plan to use in the following week or two? How old is too old? Thanks very much!

    Algae or pollen?

Hey all, So, in an otherwise trouble-free pool that has been getting proper chlorination/brushing, I've seen some stringy yellowish-green material forming on the surface of the pool in the last 3 or so days. It collects in the skimmer after filtering. We are getting a ton of pollen-drop right...

Recommendations for fine mesh pool net?

Hey all -- I'm looking for a net to help clear out the super-fine debris that collects on the surface of the water in my pool. My skimmer misses it sometimes and I thought a nice fine mesh net might help keep it debris-free. The one that I have has large openings in the net, and it's terrible...

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Haha Dirk, that's okay! I was going to mention it, but you had so much awesome info to share, I didn't want to interrupt! As far as the pool goes, yes, there was all kinds of splashing and stuff going on. Plenty of evidence on the deck and wall. The winds got up to 40-50 mph, so junk/water was...

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Thank you for following up, Kim. Really appreciate it. I reviewed the OCLT info, and will move forward as if my CYA is 50. I'm going to really dive in a run that test a few times for practice once this debacle is all cleared up haha. I'll snap pics daily as well. Thanks to this great community...

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Hey! Thanks for helping. The pool has been full close to 6 weeks. The included pool service had control over it for the first 4 weeks, but I quickly got it up to speed per TFP standards. The day before the storm hit (Thursday), my levels were: FC 6.5 CC 0 PH 7.8 ( working on lowering this with...

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

The CYA Ive done 3 times, with the same result, so I'm confident there. As far as volume, its in line with my estimates using pool calculators, but I'm not totally sure if its 100% accurate. Quick question - during my SLAM, I'm supposed to pump 24/7. Any minimum setting for speed during this...

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

I kept it mostly debris-free, but the storm was rough, and I'm pretty sure something unwanted washed in, like you guys said. I added additional barriers today and bought a sump pump to move the puddles if they get too close to over-flowing onto the deck. Hopefully that will take care of that -...

Interesting stuff, Dirk! You and Jim may be right about stuff washing into my pool. Found this old thread that has many similarities to my situation: Pool turned green after heavy rain

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Well, it's definitely a little bit green. :( Also, I checked the pH and FC this morning - pH was through the roof (8.2+) and my FC was down to 3. I also had the slightest tinge of pink in my CC test. With FC loss overnight, and build-up of slight CC, does that point towards active algae? If...

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Hi Jim, Yesterday, my readings were FC 6.5 CC 0 PH 7.8 ( working on lowering this with MA) CH 475 TA 70 CYA 45 It was crystal clear! Hoping its nothing to worry about. Going to test tonight and see where it is now. I may be overreacting haha.

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Thanks for the advice! Now, I'm noticing some green popping up. Ive read its pretty common with storms, but my pool was balanced yesterday and only been full around 6 weeks. Guess ill wait and see how it looks tomorrow after filtering all night? Thanks again!

Rain getting heavy, pool filling up

Hey all, We are getting a ton of rain in my area, and the pool is filling up fast. Two questions: When should I pump out a couple inches (how long to wait, water level-wise)? Also, I have the hose attachment at my pump - just hook up a hose and run the pump with the valve open to lower the...

New pool owner, and boy, am I glad I found you.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I was able to brave the muriatic acid, and lowered my pH into my desired range, I also used baking soda to replace the TA I lost during that process. PoolMath led the way. I'm sitting here now: FC - 6 CC - 0 pH - 7.6 TA - 70 CH - 475 CYA - 45 My CSI looks good...

New pool owner, and boy, am I glad I found you.

Hey Dirk - No water softener attached, but I re-tested the water from the same bib that's used to fill the pool this morning and came up with the same results. Originally I used my kitchen sink. It sounds like the "pool guy" got a little crazy with the calcium haha. Maybe I'll enjoy the season...

To be honest, I'm not sure. I tested my fill water, and it was TA 50 CH 75. We do have a decent amount of rock wall, and there were a bunch of grout issues that were fixed. Could something have contributed to it there? Maybe it's worth me re-testing to rule out an error? Thanks for the help, I...

New pool owner, and boy, am I glad I found you.

Worked great, thank you! So, just to make sure I'm on the right track - I plan to lower my pH to about 7.6, not to exceed 7.8 at any time. I'm also going to try to increase my FC from 4 to 6, which is the bottom of my target range based on CYA from the CYA-Chlorine chart. Sound close? Thanks...

Thanks so much! I just went and grabbed some muriatic acid. This seems like a silly question, but is there any type of measuring cup/container that I need for something so strong, or would a standard industrial-strength cup do the trick? Also, you might remember that I was waiting for my final...

Thanks very much for the advice. Quick questions, if you don't mind - if I want to avoid the hassle of handling muriatic acid, will dry acid give me similar results? Also, should I avoid using my sheer descent until I get the pH in check, to limit aeration? Thanks a ton.

Hey all, First off - so great to stumble upon this site. Such good info and easy-to-follow instruction. I'm really liking it. We just had a pool finished, filled in late January of this year. The builder included 30 days of pool service, which ends tomorrow, so I figured I'd get up to speed on...
