"Chlorine Burn": Chloramine vs chlorine in water supply?

Apparently chloramine is used as our tap water disinfectant. Our water doesn't have much of a smell at all to it. Our city is doing maintenance that requires switching to free chlorine to perform a Chlorine Burn and said that the water will have a strong chlorine odor (see artlicle below)...

I floated my liner after overfilling!! Now what?

hey everyone, I was watering my garden by the pool yesterday and today I realized I never turned the water off. Today I came out and saw my floating liner puffing out all over. I lowered the level a bit waited one hour and chemistry/salt still look good. Will the puffy liner go down in...

    TFP Initial Sign-Up suggestion

Guys..... I just read my 3,000th post from a newcomer asking a question with no signature at the bottom of the page, with a reply from one of you requesting that person to provide one. Why can't we make the signature a mandatory requirement when new people sign up? There is a good link on...

Risk of cover leak when using automatic sump pump?

The last 2 years I've rested my automatic sump pump on top of my solid pool cover (just a big tarp). Its been so nice not having to worry about water on my cover. However, I was thinking to myself, what if my pool cover developed a leak? The sump would just run continuously until it basically...

Closed Pool with pH=7.0, any action needed?

My pool is currently fully closed. Last year (the first time I closed it), I opened it the first week of April but it was too cold to go in the entire month and a ton of pollen dropped in. So this year I was going to open it the end April/beginning of May (although if the temps get too high I...

Window Squeegee that fits a standard pool pole?

Has anyone purchased a window squeegee attachement that fits a standard pool pole? I need to get to my second story windows and would prefer to buy one as an attachment and not have to deal with storing another pole. I found one on Amazon but reviews say it doesn't fit a pool pole. Figured it...

Close Pool with Solid Cover but leave freeze protect on (Hybrid closing)

I’m curious what you think about a hybrid closing I’m thinking about: For 2 winters (in Virginia), I’ve left the pool open all winter. However, I spend more time maintaining it in the winter than I do in the summer = Constantly scooping out twigs & decomposed leaves, empty skimmers, run...

Plastic gasket material coming off bottom of steps

The attached picture is the bottom of my pool steps. The rubber has come loose - I was just going to clip it off at each end. Just curious if anyone knows what its there for. Decorative I hope.

Suction Side Air Leak - Can I ignore for now? (gif attached)

I have a suction side air leak (see attached). With hose water, I was able to figure out that it is the skimmer isolation valve. There are no big bubbles or gaps, just small ones that dance around. I first noticed it at the end of last season. Of course I'll be keeping an eye on it, but I'm...

Robot Cleaner with best wall scrubbing?

I've seen various posts about some robots having 2 vs 3 cleaning brushes. I've also read complaints that the "brushes" move at the same speed and aren't technically brushing, but others have a 3rd that moves faster. What models are known to perform better "scrubbing" of the surface, which is...

How deep dip temperature probe to determine when to open pool

This is my first year closing the pool. I understand it is desirable to open the pool before the temperature hits 60F - I'm not sure what time of year that is for me. Recently, on cloudy, normal temperature days, the first inch of water is 58F and 6 inches down it is 52F. On a sunny above...

Kitchen, Pool, Pavilion after 5 years of planning

After many years of planning, we went from an empty backyard to this. This coming summer will be our 3rd with this setup. Had a lot of fun planning this. The night lighting is one of my favorite parts, as well as the Sonos speakers near the ceiling. Creates a great atmosphere at night!

Brand of Cover Water Bags and Pillow (or alternatives)

So I'm looking to purchase cover water bags and cover pillows on Amazon and the reviews are just horrible for everything! Do any of you have a brand you haven't had problems with? Or, do any of you have suggestions for alternatives? FYI, using a 30'x50' cover for inground pool in Virginia...

    Remove gage when closing??

When picking up some anti-freeze, the local store mentioned that I should remove my filter housing pressure gage for the winter (Southern Virginia here). Any idea why I would have to remove it? Can't imagine why. Thanks!

    Additional Methods to Minimize Algae

For the second year in a row I’ve had to SLAM my pool at least a couple of times a season (which puts it out of commission for up to a week since we don’t like the chlorine smell plus it adds a LOT of extra work and trips for bleach). This is despite reading hundreds of threads on how to...

Poor circulation part cause of algae?

I'm currently working on my 2nd SLAM of the year, despite ideal chemistry which is frustrating. I've noticed that all algae blooms start in the 8 foot deep end wall/floor edge. Could poor circulation be part of the problem? Would pointing the return jet in the deep end down towards the...

How to read end of FC test

I've always been confused as to when the FC test is considered complete. Many times the pink will be completely gone, then I'll add an extra drop and realize that the water was a bit cloudy because it goes from slightly cloudy to crystal clear. Is crystal clear or no pink left but slightly...

    Pump speed affect FC generation?

I have a 2 speed pump and I'm wondering if my salt cell produces the same overall amount of FC in either slow or fast speed. I figure with fast speed there is more water moving through the cell, but its probably not producing as much FC during that time. (I'm running 2 hours in fast speed and...

Where do you dump skimmer contents?

I'm curious to know where everyone dumps their skimmer contents. With an inground pool, just dumping in the grass/flower beds could result in it getting blown right back in. I have a 13 gallon kitchen garbage can that I use, but when it rains the can collects water becoming smelly and heavy...

Why CYA of 60ppm "Not Recommended" for SWG pools?

On the Chlorine / CYA chart for salt water pools, a CYA of 60 is not recommended. The last couple of weeks my FC has been 8ppm with CYA 60 (had to order more CYA). Adding stabilizer today, but just curious why this is not recommended as long as I'm maintaining FC well over the minimum. Thanks!

FC level band at 10ppm - How measure pH?

So I'm keeping the pool open for the winter and my CYA is currently 80ppm (going to let it drift down of course). With the salt cell off for the winter I'm supposed to follow the "Non-SWCG" FC/CYA bands with a target of 9-11ppm for CYA=80. My FC is currently 11.0. I've read that pH is not...

Winterize Waterfall for Pool Not being closed?

I have an inground pool that will remain open all winter. My Hayward Aqua Plus system has automatic freeze protection. I blew out my waterfall line with a shop vac, then isolated it. During a recent rain I'm realizing that rainwater can collect at the top of the waterfall basin and drain...

    How often brush pool?

I've been reading previous posts about preventing algae and I've seen that many people recommend brushing the pool walls on a regular basis. How often do you all brush (I'm doing a SLAM 3 weeks after a previous SLAM and want to ensure that I'm doing everything correctly). Is once a week...

    SLAM and pool cleaner

Getting ready to SLAM my pool. I understand the importance of scrubbing/vacuuming the entire pool, getting every nook and cranny. I normally leave my cleaner in the pool unless anyone is swimming in it. After discovering the algae, I took the cleaner out - it doesn't have any viable algae on...

    Report on Salt Water Testing

So test results for salt has always bothered me. I posted this issue before and I understand that the different methods have a large +/- range, and to just make sure that I go by what my Hayward Aqua Plus says (which I do). So I found a 3000ppm salt solution on Amazon and figured I'd post the...

Air Gap in Pump Filter with Solar Panels

Hi, For my 25k in-ground pool, I have a SP3210X152 TriStar 1.5 HP Pool Pump (Max Rate, Two Speed) which normally ran fine at 10psi in high speed with a clean filter. After having a solar system installed, the pump now runs fine at 13.5psi high speed with the diverter valve bypassing the...

Salt testing methods all over the place

Hey everyone, So I know that no matter what, I should always maintain my salt levels based on whatever my Hayward Aqua Plus reads out, so that it works correctly. It just bugs me that salt testing is all over the place. My pool, salt cell, reagents, salt meter are all <10 months old. I took...

Ambient lighting for backyard around pool area

Water Level Band for Vinyl In-Ground Pool

I'm trying to figure out what my minimum and maximum pool level band should be. I'm surprised I can't find any official information on this. So my Hayward skimmers have a tiny, faint arrow for proper water level. About 1 inch above that is a screw holding the skimmer in on each side. My...
