If I understood you I do similar, however I never actually drain. I have a skimmer cover and then a return plug that lets you blow out the line without draining.

@JamesW I took another video, here is the skimmer working fine and then what happens when pump shuts off. The pump basket was completely free of bubbles before it shut off. It also started right back up without bubbles but I didn't give it much time off so maybe it drains overnight. Pump vid 7

Thanks! I will continue to check for air leaks but hopeful the check valve will prevent the blowback. Can I put Check valve before pump or Does it have to be between pump and filter?

Thanks everyone, good advice. I think Richard hit the nail on the head, it is more of an expelling than just water floating back Past the weir door. I’m going to bleed filter valve and check for air making it in to the suction side.
