Mustard algae, second year in a row, same time of year

Hi, thanks for your reply. I had completed 2 or more SLAMS, passed OCLT both times then raised CL level to yellow mustard algae shock level, again passing the OCLT. The algae would reappear a few days later after Cl level drifted back to around 13. It certainly was stubborn. We removed the clear...

    Battle against yellow mustard algae

Whoa! What? All these years we’ve been struggling to take them out? My husband in 65°water, inventing new curse words? My question is, we get hard freezes, like below zero temps in January. We have to drain below the skimmer, close up the skimmer hole. Drain and dry the pump and store. Will this...

    Battle against yellow mustard algae

Thanks! That’s 1 of 2 probabilities. We take the steps out and clean in September, open the pool late May. Hate to close the pool this early, we should get maybe 5 more good days. That’s a great idea with the holes! We use a concrete block for weight, never an issue since 1999. I’m leaning...

    Battle against yellow mustard algae

Hi! Thanks for responding! I’ve scrubbed around the intake, around the outlet. We have InnovaPlas Fiesta pool steps, secured to a deck, they were installed prior to 2007. There are only 2 4” holes on the backside for circulation. Inside of the steps could be a hiding place. However, to check...

    Battle against yellow mustard algae

Hi, I’ve been battling yellow mustard algae since end of June with a vacation here and there. Never had this stuff before. Read interesting thread from 2007. First, I live in Central NY, home of the perpetual cloud. We do have summer in July and early to mid August. Seems like the Experts live...

Mustard algae, second year in a row, same time of year

Thanks, that’s what I’m thinking. Weird that the algae is only on the steps. Maybe the steps are old, not as smooth anymore. I brush them daily.

Mustard algae, second year in a row, same time of year

I have been battling yellow mustard algae since mid July. We’ve had so much rain. Completed at least 2 slams, followed by the yellow mustard slams. I think I’m all clear, then let the Cl drift down, only to have to repeat the process. I thought I was all clear yesterday, and this has happened...

    Chlorine tests

Oops, FC not CL! My directions are old, 1 heaping scoop, printed by the manufacturer, hmmm. I agree, one level is sufficient. And I divide the drops in half to get FC reading. Math is not my strong suit. Thank goodness for Pool Math! I’ll again try to get FC to 30. Used a ton of liquid...

    Chlorine tests

Good morning. I have some yellow mustard algae. Vacuumed , brushed, scrubbed, repeat. Difficult to eradicate. Raised the CL to 30, not maintaining on OCLTs, drops to 22. Due to heavy rains and storms, hadn’t checked in a day. Dropped to 17, and maintains at that. Water clear, no sign of...

    Enter pool during SLAM?

Thank you! FC at 20, CYA at 50. Will also need to drain some water due to lots of rain, so CYA will fall a bit.

    Enter pool during SLAM?

Got some algae, doing a SLAM. Maintaining FC @ 20. Can I enter the pool, to vacuum and brush? I find it difficult to do a thorough job outside our above ground pool. Thank you!

Wildfire smoke — effect on pool chemistry?

I wouldn’t add algaecide, contains copper. Keep the FC up. We are all in this together.

First time test of pool with TF-Pro and PoolMath app help needed

I keep tablets for vacations. Keeping an eye on CYA. Prior to finding TFP, and a good test kit, I was dumping tabs in all the time, still had algae. Once tested properly, my CYA was way up to 151 at one point. Of course, I was PoolStored! Thanks to all for helping me become a Pool Maintenance...

Wildfire smoke — effect on pool chemistry?

Thank you for the advice. I have been testing daily,FAS/DPD using pool math. Trying to keep FC above 4, going through a lot of liquid chlorine. CYA low at 35, rain isn’t helping, skimmer overflows then having to drain. I’ll keep at it!

Wildfire smoke — effect on pool chemistry?

My pH dipped also, as sometimes it will drift. As you know, we’ve had a lot of rain! I’m brushing and vacuuming today, followed by back flush to waste. Looking at adding boric acid to assist with algae and make the water sparkling clean with nominal change to pH and TA. Concern with dog that...

Wildfire smoke — effect on pool chemistry?

We have dense smoke from the wildfires. I also am experiencing algae. FC, pH, TA, all within parameters, CYA at 35, due to having to drain lots of rain water. Am adding CYA today after draining and backwashing. I am looking at purchasing Duda Energy Boric Acid to control the algae. For some...

    Need some help/ advice

Thank you for your prompt responses. I used Borax as that was first on PoolMath list, from reading other info, always a learning curve. Found about 1.5 cups dry acid, added last night. Here are todays values: FC 2.5, pH 8.4*, TA 130. CC, CH, CYA, Borates no change. * As the kit test tube only...

    Need some help/ advice

I have had few issues with my pool since I found TFP years back. Until now. We went on vacation for 2 weeks, added additional liquid chlorine, and a few pucks in a floating dispenser, as my CYA was low enough. When we returned, there was a bit of algae on the floor and on the shady walls...

    Need Help!

Looking good! I had an algae bloom, FC was at 8, CYA 50, (oops, should have raised CL) went away for 2 days! Past 3 days I’ve Vacuumed, scrubbed walls and floors, moved and cleaned steps and cleaned under those. Back flushed to waste about 4 times! ( have a DE filter). SLAMMED, changed DE...

    Help! I have algae!

Hi, update. Finished the SLAM process. Took a few days, I started out a bit high with the chlorine, but maintained a level of 21 overnight , pool is clear, actually was clear prior to SLAM , CC 0 as before SLAM. I wonder if it was dead algae on the walls and bottom. Currently my FC is 17.5, my...
