    Solar blanket & chlorine levels.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, this corresponds to my experience. Chlorine loss, heat loss & water loss all seem to be significantly reduced by using a solar blanket. The 3 days I left the cover off led to an unanticipated drop in FC that caused the appearance of a very slight amount of algae...

    Solar blanket & chlorine levels.

I always use a solar blanket as my pool does not have a heater. As it is only a 24' x 12' x 5' pool it heats up fairly quickly once the weather gets warm. Slammed the pool on opening, back in late May & got the water completely clear after a couple of weeks. Since then I have kept the solar...

    Raising CYA level

Actually ... sticking it in a sock created more problems. My ground up stabilizer was (I assume) much finer than granulated stabilizer. As soon as I put it in the sock & tried to put it in the pool, it wound up on the (white) pool capping. Yes ... it stains! Not a major problem. Bottom line...

    Raising CYA level

I ground it up fine before using it, sprinkled it over the surface & then swirled it around with the pool brush until it dissolved.

    Raising CYA level

FWIW: the pucks dissolve very slowly. So, I ended up grinding them up & distributing the resulting granules into the pool. After 2 pucks the CYA recorded was up to about 20, which seems about right. Ground up another two pucks which should get it to around 30 plus. I'll see where to go after that.

    Raising CYA level

So, you think it's OK to add the pucks directly to the skimmer? They're dangling over the pool jets right now, but I imagine they would dissolve faster in the skimmer. I have 4 pucks in the pool right now, which should raise the CYA (40,000 litres pool volume) by 20 ppm. That should leave me...

    Raising CYA level

The product is brand name Aqua (a Canadian company that supplies many pool products) "Stab Tabs". The composition is listed as 98.5% cyanuric acid, 1.5% "inert ingredients". It recommends one 200 gm puck per 9,000 litres to raise the stabilizer level by 20 ppm. What I am not sure about, is how...

    Raising CYA level

I have been waiting for my test kit refills to arrive from the US (I used up the last drop of the 0013 as well as the R-0600 & R-0014 at the end of last year). My CYA is not registering at all. It had been low (20 -30) for the last couple of seasons after several years of only using liquid...

    Test kits Canada

Same old question yet again! I've always ordered my TF100 refills here, shipped to my address in Buffalo & picked up there. This year, this may be a problem. I won't need them until sometime mid-May, but the way things are going there's no guarantee that it will be possible to cross...

    Noisy pump

No it's not an air in the pump basket noise. It's like the normal noise ... but louder. I would guess it's the bearings. The pump isn't that old - I think we replaced it about 5 or 6 years ago.

    Noisy pump

I have a 1 HP Hayward pump. This year I replaced the GFI power receptacle that the pump plugs into. I don't if it is in any way related to this, but this summer the pump is much louder than I remember. Any opinions on what might be causing this? The pump seems to work OK, just noisy.

    Pool Cooling??

Geez! Cooling the pool water! I have a small (12' x 24' x 5') vinyl pool in Ontario Canada. The heater broke down about 6 years ago & I discovered that I didn't really need it as the water (assisted by a solar blanket) generally always reached about 26 C (79F) during the summer swimming...

    CYA & TA levels

I've been using liquid chlorine exclusively for the last 4 years. In that time the CYA levels slowly dropped to around 30, so last year I added some stabilizer pucks for a while. After opening this spring the CYA readings have been consistently between the 30- 40 mark. Today was the first time...

    CYA & TA levels

https://www.pioneerfamilypools.ca/products/aqua-trol-8-kg/ I assume it is the same thing as baking soda? I was under the impression that TA levels should be 100-120, but now I see that 80 ppm is good. I'll check all the levels again this evening. But at last test: FC 7.5 pH 7.5 CYA 60 CC...

    CYA & TA levels

Opened the (very green) vinyl pool just under two weeks ago. I'm just about crystal clear now. My TA levels were low around 40, so I added Trol that I had left over from the pool store & topped up with baking soda. However, every store in the neighbourhood is now out of baking soda! Last...

    Initial Test readings

So, after a week I have the following readings: FC 10 pH 7.2 CYA 35 (it has been somewhere between the 30 & 40 all the readings I have taken) CC 1 TC 11 TA 30 CH 100 We've had a couple inches of rain in the last two days which has probably dropped the pH. The water is clear, but not...

Ok. Thanks! Overdid the initial chlorine as the pool was very green. I'll let the FC drop down & then see where I am ...

    Initial Test readings

Just opened the pool yesterday. Very green. Dumped in about 12 litres of liquid chlorine (40,000 litre vinyl pool). Took my first readings this morning (pool is now opaque blue): FC 27 pH 7.8 ( a bit lower) CYA 30 CC 3 TC 30 TA 40 CH ... don't know. Did the test & although...

Pump not working. Is it worth shocking the pool at all?

Managed to get the pump to turn over this afternoon .. so working on dispersing the pea soup now. Late opening because of cold weather which I think has allowed to algae to build up, as our pool cover is old & is starting to be pretty transparent. Now it's suddenly 34 C!

Pump not working. Is it worth shocking the pool at all?

I'm hoping to get the pump operational today .. or replace (:() in the next couple of days if I can't. So you're suggesting starting the slam would be ok with frequent brushing & moving of the water?

Pump not working. Is it worth shocking the pool at all?

Weather went from 50 F to 80 F in two days ... as usual :(. Opened up the pool & went to turn on the Hayward pump ... the pump won't turn over. Had the same problem last spring but was able to turn the impeller by accessing through the back panel. This year it seems to be seized so tight that I...

    Opening pool

So ... I apparently added too much muriatic acid - the pH is now below the 7.2 level. It generally always works its way up over time, but so far, after about 5 days, has not shown any sign of that. Should I just leave it as is for a couple of weeks? CYA is still reading below 20 after...

    Opening pool

OK. I put two stabilizer pucks in a sock in front of a jet overnight. After about 16 hours the pucks look to be about half dissolved. I took another CYA reading - it has not noticeably changed from before adding the stabilizer pucks - which is to say the dot is still visible when the tube is...

    Opening pool

Complete tests using drop test for FC, CC & TC: FC 6 PH 8.2 CYA less than 20 TA 70 CA 150 CC 0.5 TC 6.5 I don't have any muriatic acid on hand. I do have some stabilizer pucks. I also have some HTH pucks. For the last two years I have only used liquid chlorine & don't believe that I...

    Opening pool

Weather has been atrocious here ... but opened the pool about 4 days ago. Put in about a gallon & a half of liquid chlorine & the murk has cleared up with the water more or less clear. Did not have my PH & FC solutions until today (ran out at the end of last season). Tested the FC which had...

Water temperature, sunlight & chlorine levels.

The water was crystal clear for weeks & around 24C. I was adding fairly small amounts of chlorine each night with the chlorine levels staying pretty steady around 5 - 6 ppm. Then the air temps hit the 30's for a number of days, the water temp increased to 28C. I left the solar blanket off for a...

Water temperature, sunlight & chlorine levels.

I was a bit surprised at the difference in chlorine loss over the last week. This seems to indicate that the exposure to high sunlight levels has dramatically increased the usage of chlorine. I'm wondering if keeping the solar blanket on during the day will help reduce the chlorine loss...

Water temperature, sunlight & chlorine levels.

Opened my pool late this year due to cold spring. Quite green on opening. 10 days of slamming cleaned it up. I've had completely clear water for the last month. However, until the recent heat wave the water has been at, or below 24C (I don't heat it) & I kept the solar blanket on except when...
