Solar pool cover & reel advice for in-ground pool

I'm resurrecting this thread because it hits exactly on my questions. I just bought a new cover. I didn't go looking for advice first, and chose clear, but I think my indoor plaster pool poses different challenges. The old blue cover finally disintegrated, but it was at least 10 years old...

    My un-interesting bucket test

...and you clicked on this thread anyway, huh? I guess I'm not the only one here who's been a little bored lately! I think I was suffering a little boredom-induced anxiety. My pool has a small tolerance for variances in water level. There's no coping lip, just vertical tile, so too much...

Don't Forget To Lay In Some Emergency Chlorine!

It's really not - especially if you have the right brush. I have the kind with just a small scoop on the top. It moves a tremendous amount of water - a few minutes of forceful brushing mixes better than than hours of pump time.

does anyone actually LIKE doing a manual vacuum of their pool....

For me it's exactly like painting: a rewarding, relaxing if not fun activity with annoying prep at the beginning and clean-up after.

Friend's new pool - I need help with this valve please

Thanks Roscoe. So there's no rinse setting? It's just regular flow or reverse?

Friend's new pool - I need help with this valve please

Friends of mine just bought a home with an IG pool. Yesterday I delivered my house-warming gifts, which of course were a TF-100 and a SpeedStir. (I forgot to buy a bow. I blame Covid) The setup is mostly what I expected, except for the valve and the waste line. The latter goes out of the...

    Strategy for running VS pump

Yes, I think that's probably overkill. More to the point, it's not taking advantage of your pump's potential to save energy and wear (assuming it has a programmable controller?). When planning a VS pump schedule, keep in mind that energy consumption isn't linear: half the speed may consume...

    TF-100 test kit question

Her CYA is only 30, and she already has tablets and didn’t mention having CYA on-hand, so I recommended that she do just that.

    TF-100 test kit question

Well since 40 is low, you could carefully continue to use tablets for a while instead of buying CYA. Clorox hasn't been our friend lately - I don't even know if they sell regular bleach anymore. "Cloromax Technology" includes additives that you don't want in your pool. "A friend told me"...

Where to buy DE in Canada

I was going to give my Canadian (ON) friend some DE for his sand filter, but then we thought better of sending him through a border crossing with a ziplock full of a fine white powder...

    TF-100 test kit question

Those tablets are probably what got you to 30. They contain CYA, so they'll keep taking your CYA higher. With a relatively small pool, you could use them until CYA gets too high, at which point you'll have to exchange water. If you'd prefer not to exchange water, you'll need to switch to...

Need advice and questions about a residential indoor pool

Well actually... That's my living room/kitchen in my avatar pic. :D I do have some doors that can close-off the pool room, but I only use them for safety reasons (kids, dogs etc). I agree that a 250K heater would be fine. I have a 200K. It raises my 12,000 gal pool 1º every 45 minutes...

I have a lot to learn! Indoor pool

As one of the more prolific indoor folks around here (although not THE most by a longshot), I struggle with the mention of "key disadvantages" and "problems"... Indoor pools have challenges for sure, but I'd like people to know that they can also be very, very, I mean ridiculously...

I have a lot to learn! Indoor pool

Dang. I guess I'm too late to this party. I assume Bill W is gone? I would've liked to participated in this. We'd have a lot to talk about, since my home has a flat roof and an indoor pool on the second level...

    Muriatic Acid storage

Note Allen's post too! The fumes are brutal. I keep my acid in a cabinet with no other chemicals. I keep the bottle lids tight and store them in a clear plastic tote with a cover. Last week I realized that I had left the charger for a remote control boat in that cabinet. The metal on it...

    Do chlorine allergies really exist?

That's what I was thinking, but I DID suffer some loss! I heated the pool to 91º but only 2 people swam.

    Do chlorine allergies really exist?

My aunt visited over Thanksgiving. My Mom had told her something about my pool that apparently made it sound like I didn't use chlorine, so she was eager to swim. When I corrected that, my aunt changed her mind about swimming, citing an allergy to chlorine. I suggested that she may be...

    2nd thoughts about Raypak

My Raypak 206 has read 5-6º too high since it was installed a year ago. I was starting to panic while reading this thread as I wondered if my HX is damaged and my warranty clock is ticking down! It always reads too low though, whether it's heating or not, so I guess I'll chalk it up to a bad...

    Google Wifi extenders

It sounds like you're describing two different approaches. Mesh describes how the AP's relate and communicate to each other. When you mentioned passwords I wonder if you're also using different SSID's on each AP? They aren't mutually exclusive - you could have extended or wired AP's with...

    New Pool Owner in Florida

In case anyone thinks I've been day drinking: a moderator moved this thread. Marty had posted above me in which he welcomed Ray and suggested that he read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry - Trouble Free Pool That post apparently didn't survive the move. Now that that's done, maybe I'll start...

    New Pool Owner in Florida

Hi Ray, welcome to TFP! Please take Marty's advice above and do some reading. I promise you it's time well-spent, and a proper test kit is money well-spent. We tend not to trust pool store test results, but if they're remotely reasonable, you're starting from a decent place to have very...

    Giving TFP a Try

I think that's what's going on. I have some powder like that as well. It actually still works, but not like it should: it goes pink with CL, but never goes completely clear. The light on the SpeedStir makes a big difference. Fortunately, I took some TFP advice the last time I ordered a...

Stain Removing: Cloudy Blue Water Stage

That's interesting - we have very different routines! My pump runs everyday, but at low speeds. I manually kick it up now and then for better skimming. I've never had a weir door. I figured my pool was so old that a retrofit would be a challenge, but while recently taking measurements to...

Stain Removing: Cloudy Blue Water Stage

I had to SLAM my pool when it was still bromine. The smell was horrible - I had to run the exhaust fan for weeks until it cleared. I have to say though, that with liquid chlorine, the only time my pool has an odor is when I'm off my game. (and that's rare) I've considered adding a UV...

Pump died, need help picking a new one

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. The power consumption of electric motors isn't linear. While pumping at half speed, the pump consumes closer to one fourth the power. I swapped my single-speed pump on a timer for a programmable VS unit. It's quieter, I can program to do exactly what I want...
