    Mustard Algae or silt?

Based on your pictures and your description of "(If i brush the stuff it puffs up into a cloud and dissipates) which makes me believe it isnt sand. And it doesn't seem coarse when i feel it in my skimmer sock. It kinda feels slimy but not super slimy," It is like the mustard algae I deal with...

    It's not algae after all........help!

I have had mustard algae that looks like that. It has looked like sand and even small piles of dirt. My filter is DE also. It could possibly be that.

    Where could algae be hiding?

I agree about the design. I was told that I couldn't change them out until we change the liner. That's going to be quite a ways off. I am going to start saving down to pennies because I want them replaced as well as the skimmers and fiber optic lights.....all possible culprits.

    Where could algae be hiding?

Our pool came with the house when we bought it and it is a vinyl liner pool with steps similar to those. I often wonder if the open space on either side was once sealed. I can only go slightly in with any brush. Last year, I had a black dust cloud come out similar to what you said. But, I don't...

Help for Those Who Cannot Defeat Algae with the Desired Method

Hi Matt I was tired when I responded and I realized it might help if I clarify what I did in an attempt to prevent the yo yo effect (even though the dose was small for my size of pool). Btw...the reason I keep using the Aquafinesse is due to its effect on biofilm. And...it seems to have...

Help for Those Who Cannot Defeat Algae with the Desired Method

Hi Matt I held off on using this method due to being aware of how the NaBr works. Unfortunately, there are places that I cannot physically get to in the pool in order to brush.....which complicates the process for me. I am only using 1/4 the dose recommended of the 88% NaBr for my size of...

What have you found in your skimmer...

Mice, voles, birds, snakes, opossum, rabbit, frogs, tons of different types of insects, large black wolf spiders.....several that have had their back side covered in babies...ugh! We did manage to rescue a chipmunk :)

Help for Those Who Cannot Defeat Algae with the Desired Method

Hi Maddie! Okay....this is the only thing that has worked for me so far. Before I started my treatment, I manually vacuumed the pool; cleaned the filter; and cleaned the salt cell. I made sure my pH was 7.2, TA was within range, CYA at 45, CH min of 200, salt level appropriate for my SWG, and...

Help for Those Who Cannot Defeat Algae with the Desired Method

I think most will agree that this is a definite agree to disagree topic on TFP. But here it goes.....There are some members who, for whatever reason, use TFP method for getting rid of mustard algae (the dreaded "it could be pollen, dirt, or sand") but it constantly reappears. I will up front...

Hair highlights turned green by chlorine??

I thought I'd check the Deep End out and I am glad I did! It is so nice to see you on here frustratedpoolmom!! The experts on here are all nice, helpful, and knowledgeable but I sure do miss seeing you, Waterbear, ChemGeek, JasonLion and others chiming in. There were some really interesting...

Clear Blue Water but still new algae everyday

I'm sorry to say that your pictures look just like my pool looked like when I couldn't keep it away. It behaved the same way in my pool and my journey was a frustrating one also. If you used your auto pool cleaner during the outbreak, use a bleach solution to clean it thoroughly.

    Persistent Dead Algae

I am glad to see that you are not dealing with mustard algae. It can be a pain in the you know what and tends to reappear after opening. For me, I finally found a method I am happy with that is working. Thanks for updating me :)

    Persistent Dead Algae

There are several scenarios that could be involved. I can tell you that from my experience with mustard algae, it begins and returns in the same spots. Mine isn't a coating either. Some of it looks like somebody dumped sand down my corner slant, other areas look like splattered blobs, some are...

If FC is at or above the recommended for CYA and no CC present, but mustard algae is present...

I've tried to feel its texture, but it is difficult to get near it. Whenever I slowly reach in to touch it, it turns into a dust cloud.

If FC is at or above the recommended for CYA and no CC present, but mustard algae is present...

Unfortunately, this is the second pool season it has reared its ugly head. I have steps built into the shallow end that I can't get back into the crevices with a brush and my old fiber optic lights can't be dismantled until it's time for a liner change. So.....the winter closure allowed it to do...

If FC is at or above the recommended for CYA and no CC present, but mustard algae is present...

Since mustard algae is tougher to kill with chlorine, does its presence after weeks of treating and brushing at TFP recommended chemistry levels and frequency warrant the same concern of bacteria and/or viruses that green algae presence does?

Losing the Resistant Mustard Algae Battle

Hi everyone! I thought I'd update this thread for those wondering what the status of my pool has been for the last 20 days. I am happy to report that during that time, the pool has been algae free maintained at CYA = 40 and FC = 7, pH = 7.7, TA = 85, CH = 210, temp = 83, and 0 phosphates. I...

Losing the Resistant Mustard Algae Battle

Hi Katodude, I appreciate your input. I'll try to answer your question. There were 2 reasons I didn't use it. For my robot, the directions state to not use it for 12-24 hours after adding chemicals and I was adding chemicals every day while also maintaining very high free chlorine levels. The...

Losing the Resistant Mustard Algae Battle

I apologize for not checking in and answering questions lately. We have been getting sons into college and visiting family in Florida up until a couple of days ago. It has been hectic. I never had mustard algae before this season and hadn't changed how we angled the returns.....but in...

Losing the Resistant Mustard Algae Battle

Catanzaro, Thanks for all of the info. Since I had Phosphate remover on had, a phosphate level that hovered a little over 500, and a nitrate level of somewhere between 5 -20 I decided to do a phosphate treatment too. I figured that eliminating as many of the contributors as possible could only...

How to get rid of Backswimmers when my chems are good??

Up until this pool season, I had only seen a few boat swimmers (they don't bite from what I have read) in my pool a couple of times. But this season has been like no other for me (dealing with algae and with insects). Back swimmers (they do bite and from what I read, it hurts) also decided to...

Re: The more I read in this forum about algae.... 2008GMCsierrasle, Good morning :) On the floors, it would start off looking like it was black algae (tiny black spots) and then the brown spots and blobs would form in those places. When more established, it would be on the walls but not...

Re: The more I read in this forum about algae.... In my pool when not affected by treatments: Like sand in the dimples of the white steps, in front of the skimmer weirs, and in the vacuum hose Like brownish baby poo spots and streaks on the vinyl liner floor When brushing, it created...

Losing the Resistant Mustard Algae Battle

Hi Serious1, I have gone through 3 bags of pool store DE and 2 boxes of Clorox brand DE (I bought at Lowe's when I panicked at 9 PM on a Friday night upon realizing I had back-washed without checking the pool cabinet to be sure I had an extra bag). I now by 2 bags at a time a the pool store...
