    Pump only primes on backwash

Ok so we seem to have fixed the groundhog hole in our pipe, but now when we turn the pump on, it won't prime. Other info: 1. Pump primes when filter is set to backwash. 2. Water level is high enough. 3. I changed the pump basket o-ring. 4. I closed both of the skimmer valves, one at a time, and...

    I've got the groundhog blues

So, we have black HDPE pipe that goes out the back of our pool house and then underground to our skimmers. A few years ago, a groundhog chewed a few nice holes in the line. At the time, we "fixed" the problem with some electricians tape. What's a better way to fix this - aside from digging up...

There's no way this is going to work, right? (Pump motor replacement)

Ok so I have a new motor. It matches the specs of the old motor. But the part that leads to the wet end looks different. See pictures. There's no way this is right, is there?

    Pump filter drain plug

Okay, so this feels like a stupid question, but I'm going nuts (haha). We've got an air leak somewhere, so I replaced the pump filter and chlorinator gaskets. Still had a leak so I bought new drain plugs. The chlorinator one and the one that goes in the side of the pump filter fit just fine...

    Sealant around hose barb

Good morning! I recently broke one of the PVC pipes for our skimmer line, and we had to rebuild the whole area. We re-used the existing hose barbs which seem to be in good condition after a good cleaning. However, it seems to be leaking. I have some GE silicone 2*+ (whatever that means). It...

    Pool resurfacing in Michigan

House purchased almost 5 years ago with a pool that was built in the 70s. Unfortunately have no real history on the construction, e.g. what was used to paint it, if/how it's been painted since then, etc. I've been wanting to repaint or do something since we moved in, but we are finally to the...

    Pump won't prime

Hi all: In search of ideas. My pump gets thiiiiiiis close to priming but never seems to get there. It doesn't do the empty/fill back up thing, it just seems to stay at like 95%. There appears to be enough water in the pool; the skimmers are not doing the whirlpool thing. And I just looked at...

    Dumb opening/light question

We are replacing our whole light fixture. Can I open my pool before that is done?

    Pool light identification

Any ideas about this light? I don't see a sticker or anything on it. Etching reads "American Products Company Los Angeles California" and, at the top, "Submerge before lighting". I have no idea if this is the original light (from the 70s), but I am guessing it is.

    I did something foolish

So! I'm back. First year closing the pool last year, first time opening this year. Of course I opened to a green pool. I was going to open 2 weeks ago, but last week was cold (with snow!). I had to buy a plumbing part from the local pool store, and while I was there figured I would pick up...

    Another n00b closing question

This one should be a quickie. I noticed a few weeks ago that my TA and CH are low. Do I need to remedy this before closing, or is it something that can wait until next year? Pardon typos; sheep have hooves, not hands.

    Pump noise

? Well now that I have the filter working perfectly well, our pump has started making a loud noise. I read a few different sites that gave me an idea of what it could be, but I'm no expert on pumps or motors in general. I took a video so you can hear the sound; anyone have an idea so I can be...

    Filter problems

So. We FINALLY GOT OUR POOL CLEAR ENOUGH TO SEE THE BOTTOM!! YESSSSSS Now we are having filter problems. 1. Water drips out the waste line when filter is on (turned to filter). 2. Sand comes out when backwashing (not sure if it is a significant amount though). 3. Sand is returned back into the...

    Skimmer suction

We have two skimmers in our pool; one in the shallow end and one in the deep on opposite sides of the pool. This morning I went to vacuum and there was little to no suction from the deep end skimmer. Is that normal? If not, what is the first step to diagnose/fix? Pardon typos; sheep have...

    Greetings from the Mitten

Hello! My husband and I recently (September) bought a house with a pool (details in signature). Here is our fun story: We have never owned a pool before. When we walked through the house (4 times before we put an offer in), the pool was sparkly, clear, and lovely. The day of the inspection...
