Pool chemistry numbers, still have high CC

I have been battling a small outbreak of black algae on the entry steps - the 2 steps closest to the water surface. 9 days ago I added a minimum amount of copper algaecide (9 ounces) and began scrubbing the whole pool with a stainless steel brush. There appears to be no trace of any remaining...

DE through returns on pump start-up

I installed new Hayward DE grids in my DE6020 with Hayward Select A Flow valve and added the recommended 7.5 pounds of DE. I noticed today when I turned on the pump, a ight stream of DE comes out of the returns. I only noticed it because the sun was shining directly over one of the returns...

Advice needed on a pvc fitting

I am replacing my pump and only have a short distance to connect the discharge to existing plumbing. The standard 2 7/8" coupler is going to be a little tight but the half size coupler will work, however that only gives me a 3/4" section of 2" PVC to reach the stop in the coupler. (see pics) Is...

Moss Rock weeping wall 10 years later with pics - what I learned...

It has been a while since I visited the site (been enjoying the pool)! I attached some pics of the wall after all these years. First off, the hardness of these stones varies from hard aggregate to soft sandstone. The softer rock did erode as expected. What I noticed most is after a rain, there...

    Calcium hardness of zero ok?

I just got a new Hot Spring Spa and I used Hot Spring Vanishing ACT which you put in for 24 hours to absorb the calcium in the water. Calcium hardness after fill was 370. Calcium hardness after using the Hot Spring Vanishing ACT was zero. Is it ok to have zero calcium hardness? Thanks

Electrical jolt from water in hot tub

I have a beachfront condo in Mexico on an upper floor that has a fiberglass hot tub placed on the tile balcony. It is about 3 years old. We just got an email from a recent guest saying that they used it every night but on the last night they touched the water while standing on the tile and...

    Chlorinator off - no flow??

I noticed that my Aqua Logic PS-8 controller keypad display said "Chlorinator off - no flow". Water is circulating fine through filter and pool with normal filter pressure. Time for a new flowswitch?? TIA

Borates measure the same after almost a year?

Ever since I put borax in the pool last spring to 50ppm using the test strips as a guide, it has stayed at that level and after testing yesterday, it is still 50ppm even with all the rain we have had and all the backwashing and refilling I have done in a year's time. It is hard for me to believe...

Closing skimmer valves prior to brushing pool floor?

I have 2 skimmer valves and a main drain valve on my system. Is it ok to close or partially close the skimmer valves so there is more suction for the drains? When I sweep the bottom of the pool, it stirs up fine particles of sand or dust that I want to get into the drains and into the filter.

Filter pressure increase in "Spa" mode normal?

Was running spa last weekend and noticed the filter pressure gauge was 10 pounds higher than when in pool mode. Pool mode is about 19 pounds and spa is around 29. The top of the filter actually visibly expands when pump is turned on in spa mode. Had PB out today and he said that a 5 - 10 pound...

    Question on TF-100 T/A test

Instructions say to add the R-0009 reagent till the color changes from green to red, counting the drops. At some point the color changes from green to a pink/light pink. It usually takes around 2 more drops to fully change to a full red color. So do I count the drops between the pink color till...

    Question on backwashing DE filter

Hello, I have a Hayward DE6020 filter and according to the manual, you backwash for 2 minutes or until water runs clean then do the rinse setting for 20 seconds. Then add DE as per the table, which is 7.5 pounds. Neighbor has same filter and never adds that much - only 3 or 4 pounds as he says...

May have used more 20 Mule Team than I really needed...

Got my borate strips today and water tested less than 10ppm. Added 3 boxes to pool, then compensated the high pH with acid. pH is fine now but borates register closer to 80 than 50 - maybe around 65 - 75. Pool size is just shy of 7,000 gallons. Will this cause any problems?

New TF test kit initial reading and questions

I suspected hi TC based on my cheap PB supplied tester. Basic test with Dave's kit after 50% dilution was a bit over 20ppm. Tried the FAS/DPD and show no CC. pH was 6.8 but have been fighting high pH (> eight) and high T/A (180) with small doses of acid for weeks. Other test kit shows pH to be...

SWCG readout much lower than testers show

Just fired up the Aqua Rite turbo cell and set it to 50%. PB added salt 3 weeks ago. Last week, readings were 3800; Monday it was 3700 - took 2 samples to 2 different Leslies and PB checked it Monday - he used a Goldline electronic tester. Leslies used electronic testors too with the digital...

    txborn's pool and kitchen

Hi all! For the last 8 months we have been in the process of building a new house and decided a pool was in order too. Problem was, there is a 10 foot wide utility easement running across the back yard. Had to get creative and squeeze it between the house and easement. We figured a smaller pool...

    Shock pool weekly??

Great forum (thanks SeanB!) In addition to reading this forum and the old one as well, I was just surfing about pool maintenance. I found several sites that insist you need to shock your pool weekly. I have never done this, but have only had this pool in service for about 6 weeks now. Is this...
