How prepared for problems are you?

After having pump motor bearings fail, pump seals leak, plumbing union crack and leak, and spending time finding the repair parts, I now keep a supply of pvc pipe & fittings, unions, motor bearings, pump seals, o-rings, etc. Most common pool emergencies can be handled quickly. As a "Do it...

Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant?

This thread is just about a year old, but I recently have used it to try and eliminate a leak/seep at a threaded pipe fitting on two pumps. I tried permatex 2, teflon tape with permatex 2, Oatey great white, Oatey great white with teflon tape, teflon tape.....lots of teflon tape. :grrrr: The...

    brush problem

Purchased a new brush (18" nylon) at Lezlees yesterday. I mentioned the bristle loss to the employee. He mentioned that pool chemicals can increase the likelyhood of bristle loss and rinsing the brush after brushing would lengthen the life of the brush. There may be some merit in that...

Using debris canister plumbing for pool cleaner.

For those that are interested, I found this about using a cleaner in the debris canister. http://www.paramountpoolproducts.com/faq/debris.php Now I need to figure out how to easily connect and purge the hose.

Using debris canister plumbing for pool cleaner.

I occasionally wished I could use a traditional pool cleaning setup in certain situations. Our pool's filter system and skimmer led me to believe this was not to be. I then read about using a cleaner with the hose attached to the suction side of the debris canister housing. The canister/bag...

    Fiber optic lens cracking

We are having our pool refinished and have noticed the fiber optic light lenses are cracked. The system is a FiberStars but the lenses and fittings appear to be Nexxus. It appears that the lens and fiber optic cable are a one piece system. Just wondering if we are in for replacing the...

    Skimmer restrictor plate

Thanks for the quick replies! The skimmer has two pipes. One, an equalizer going to the pool wall, and the other that goes to a pump then to a Paramount PCC2000 in-floor cleaning system. No filter. I will keep the restrictor as it is.

    Skimmer restrictor plate

Our skimmer has a plate that can pivot to restrict the flow to the pump or restrict the flow at the equalizer line. We have had the plate in a position that does not restrict either line. Have run this way for 2 seasons without any known problems. The pool is now getting refinished and would...

    Adding a filter

Our pool's water is filtered from the main drain only. The skimmer water is not filtered and feeds the in floor cleaning system. I use skimmer socks to help "filter" the water that ends up back in the pool via the nozzles. Would it be practical to install a filter in the skimmer's plumbing...

Pool mastic replacement. DIY or not

Installed the mastic today. Real easy! Hardest part is removing the old stuff. I like the way it fills the gap and is level with the coping and the deck if wanted. Used a grout bag. (like a pastry/cake decorating bag) filled the gaps and moistened. Added mixture as needed in low areas...

Pool mastic replacement. DIY or not

I decided to try the santastic mastic. I recently ordered and received the mastic. I have yet to install the mastic as the old mastic needs to be removed and it was a poor job putting it in. Plus some coping cracking appeared recently and wanted to get that addressed before any other repairs...

    Review: A & A in-floor cleaning system

We have a Paramount PCC2000 system and has been working well for the past year. (New to us, pool 4-5 YO) It is plumbed rather strange: Skimmer, Pump, Valves, Pop-ups. I NEED to use a skimmer sock as small debris would get back to the pool the way it is plumbed. The main drain and debris...

    Contech Scarecrow Sprinkler

We have a beach entry to our pool that pigeons and other birds enjoy using as a bath and a camode. Put a scarecrow sprinkler nearby and darned if it didn't work! I am sure some of you out in the country have deterents for animals. This may work for those who may need one. looking forward to...

    Wasp "stuff" in the pool?

After further investigation, have determined they are "springtails". Microscopic insects. Anyway, Just another annoyance. If they Tick me off enough, I will do something about them. Otherwise, as long as the water is balanced, pool equipment is operational, and there are no leaks, They're...

    polaris pop up trouble

I have a paramount pcc2000 system that may be similar to yours. Do you have a shut off for the valve assy? (turns off the operation of the valve system operation) Sounds like you have pump pressure to the valve assy. check the pop ups for obstructions. If all ok, check flow on each circuit...

    Wasp "stuff" in the pool?

We have the priviledge of being the oasis for the neighborhood wasps. Their nests are not on our property so getting rid of them poses a problem. They enjoy drinking from the pool and bounce around on the lawn. They do not get annoyed when we swim or out in the yard and do not bother...

    return jet removal / replacement

There may be crud on the threads in the wall. Also, If the threads in the wall pipe come out to the edge/wall, the the fitting will only thread in as far as the fittings threads allow. Leaving the gap. Were the original fittings flush? The builder may have used an adhesive or similar...

Stuck on the pool water slide

May need a mat or other device to slide on. Some investigation may find the pool builder's info and if they are still in business, they should be able to tell you the info you need.

What happens if I don't run my pump for a week?

What kind of timer is it? A dial type (intermatic) should be fairly easy to replace. If you have an electronic system then its more difficult. May be able to bypass the existing timer and install an inexpensive timer inline with the pump.

Pool mastic replacement. DIY or not

I found this stuff. http://santasticpoolmastic.com/index.html I would be willing to go through the effort to remove the old mastic and install this stuff to save 5 or 6 c notes. Would like other opinions if anyone has one. Thanks.

I have to decide which size cartridge filter

Its hard to determine if you will save time and money in the long run with a larger filter. In theory you should gain time between cartridge cleans with the larger filtering area of the larger cartridges. You could save money by the pump not working as hard as the filters start to get dirty. I...

    Hayward Northstar coupling o-rings

Is it possible that the couplings are not Hayward? Do the O-rings (old and new) look identical? Any cracks in the couplings? I have had two northstars and have had them disconnected a few times and have had no problems.

Favorite "toys" - ie floats, noodles, forts, hoops, etc ...

We have an Intex "Oasis Island". Costco usually sells them or similar style. Half of it is mesh so you can be wet and lounge. It is rather large and kids will try and jump from the pool deck onto it. Kids love noodles and dive games and anything that shoots water more than 10 feet! Remember...

Pool pop ups and pool vacs-can they work together???

Our pool has a Paramount PCC2000 in floor cleaning system. It works very well for us. However, we have little problem with leaves or such getting in the pool. I wanted to use a suction side cleaner. Either manual (on the end of a pole) or automatic. The only way that it would work would be...

    Chemical storage

I learned the hard way with my first pool when I stored the trichlor pucks in the shed with the rest of my stuff. I had a lot of good stuff oxydize real fast! Pucks are now stored away from everything and well ventilated! Never trust the bucket they come in either!

What type of system do you have? Our pcc2000 popups use a tool that turns them about 1/8 turn to release them.
