What kind of timer is it? A dial type (intermatic) should be fairly easy to replace. If you have an electronic system then its more difficult. May be able to bypass the existing timer and install an inexpensive timer inline with the pump.

Its hard to determine if you will save time and money in the long run with a larger filter. In theory you should gain time between cartridge cleans with the larger filtering area of the larger cartridges. You could save money by the pump not working as hard as the filters start to get dirty. I...

I learned the hard way with my first pool when I stored the trichlor pucks in the shed with the rest of my stuff. I had a lot of good stuff oxydize real fast! Pucks are now stored away from everything and well ventilated! Never trust the bucket they come in either!
