If the filter housing is small enough, raise it above water level before removing filter. While the lid is off and filter removed, lower the housing to flush out leftover debris.

The plumbing looks good! One thing that has me worried a little bit. On the side with the plumbing, it looks like it won't take much water to wash out the dirt under the pool and legs.

I am sure he meant to shut the pump off, load the chlorinator and then fire it back up.

Time to go to the store and buy a bunch of bleach. Plain, no additive, nothing fancy, cheap bleach. Look on the label and see if you can find 8.25% chlorine bleach. If not, 6% will still work.

The screw is there to keep the impeller from coming off if you were to turn the pump on and immediately shut it off. I bet you'd be ok running the pump while waiting for the screw since the direction of spin actually tightens the impeller onto the shaft.
