Sand filter people who use D.E. How much do you use in a swim season? 25lb is the smallest I can find and that, to me, seems like a lot. I made the mistake of buying several bags of CYA but hardly use any. Don't want to do the same with D.E. Thanks

Is there a difference between pool DE and garden DE? I see food grade is a no no for pools.

Where is the best place to purchase DE for the pool? Overpriced pool store, big box store (do they even carry it) garden DE? In the past I've only purchased the synthetic DE "wanna be" at the pool store.

    Taming the big green monster

Been AOL with pics days 10 and 11 since no drastic changes and the weather's been cold. Day 12: looking much better but raining and hard to get decent pics this morning. Air temp 50, water temp 57. Water level changes due to vacuuming, cleaning pump basket, changing out fixture after water loss...

Day 8: no pics and too cold to do anything out there. Day 9: Am air temp 32, water temp 54. Pool clearer and better able to see the vacuum head in the deep end. Now contending with ducks.

Opening early (for us) this year after learning about the benefits.

I'm just north of Detroit. I've had a cover pump draw water out of the pool from the cover, but the cover was old. We always lower our water level and never use the skimmer plate cover. We now leave the skimmer and return unplugged so if the water level gets too high, it'll drain thru those...

Can I prevent algae before opening my pool?

Welcome to TFP. They've all got you covered. Chlorine is heavier than water and will sink and sit on the bottom, bleaching the liner if not circulated. My bleached liner story: listened to pool store advice and dumped chlorine in when unable to circulate it. It sat at that spot for a few weeks...

You guys are killing me with these opening threads!

Using hairnets/skimmer socks would help keep a lot of the pollen out of the pool. You might have to change them out a couple times during the day. They help keep out dust, small stuff that usually gets past the skimmer basket and pollen from getting into the sand filter. We use them all swim...

Opening early (for us) this year after learning about the benefits.

We dump salt in our pool just for the feel of the water. We use Diamond brand solar salt crystals. 2 40# bags for our 16x28 oval. Stay away from Clorox brand. Many here have noticed staining problems when using it. Some have complained salts have small pebbles in them. The solar salt or pool...

Hello fellow Michigander! Congrats on switching over to the TFP method. I have a couple questions. Do you lower your water levels ~ 4-6" below the skimmer and return outlets to avoid ice damage when the water freezes and heaves up? Do you plug the skimmer and return openings or leave...

Same thing - dry rot - happened on the others I've used. These were by accident but hoping maybe they'll last longer than the elastic ones. Thanks.

Hubby thought these would work. He had also put them on the skimmer and return pipes where they exit out of the pool wall.

I got these hairnets on Amazon, hoping to use them as skimmer sock replacements. Before I open the package, has anyone used them before? What do you think of them?
