    Partial drain due to CH

Good point - should have mentioned that I'm a full BBB convertee! Bleach, Borax, Baking Soda, CYA & Muriatic Acid are the only things I've used for the last 14 months. :-D

    Partial drain due to CH

Folks I'm 18 months in to my new pool and have watched the CH rise from just over 400 (14 months ago) up to today's high of 620. I believe it's time to partially drain and refill. That being the case I have three questions which I could do with a few pointers on: :?: My CH is 620 now and my...

    Poop in the pool

257 - Your post could not have been more timely. Less than an hour after you posted, my 2.5 yr old decided he was having way too much fun in the pool to get out for a potty break. So here I am 300oz of Bleach later with a pool on the way to be de-pooped! Question - If my CYA is 50 how far do I...

Running SWG Pool with High (8.2) pH

Jason - Thanks, I'll try it. I've never gone that low. Assume that TA value is "safe" long term? The reason I ask is if I shoot for a TA of 50 & pH of 7.6 (all other numbers being the same) I have a CSI of -0.5 in a plaster pool. waterbear - Thanks for the tips. I have no probelms with the cell...

Running SWG Pool with High (8.2) pH

So, until Joel replies, I'll post to keep this thread going! :) I'm in the same position - adding about 0.5 gal/week of acid. I don't really think I will ever be able to achieve the balance of which Jason speaks without changing my plumbing. (I cannot circulate my spa without running a...

Homemade Acid OR Chlorine Injection System

Re: Homemade Acid or Chlorine Injection System If I make the assumption that my house foundation is still level then I think the base of the bucket is about 4" above water level. However, after about a week of messing around it looks like I fall foul of this "warning". All the tests I have...

Homemade Acid OR Chlorine Injection System

Mas, Thanks for the quick response. SPA - OK will run with the trial and error and if I have too many issues will drill in to the pool suction pipe. Let's see. MATH - See I got that wrong already. My bad. Will work on this! AIR - OK. Good with that. FREEZE PROTECTION - I have always...

Homemade Acid OR Chlorine Injection System

Mas, This is just what I have been looking for. I was concerned that a year after new plaster I am still adding just over half a gallon of acid a week to my 15,000 gal pool. I am a bit of a noob at this type of stuff and had a few questions for you before I kicked this off: I have a spa and...

    Improvements to Pool Calculator

Jason - Thanks makes sense. Yes B 50 was my way of saying 50ppm of Borates, did not know what the correct abbreviation was. Before I saw your post I added 24 oz of acid and retested. pH went down to 7.6 so you are spot on with your math there as far as I am concerned! :-D Richard - Wow...

    Improvements to Pool Calculator

Jason I've been using poolcalc since last summer. You mention above that you have made changes to the Ph caculation. My numbers today for my 15000 gal pool are: FC 8.0 CC <0.5 pH 8.0 CH 480 TA 80 CYA 60 B 50 Na 3800 Temp 60F At this stage I would usually add muriatic acid to take the pH down...

    Doing the Borate Thing.....

I am not one to say for sure. My kids are 3 & 1. I made the assumption (I hope not incorrectly) that if borates can be OK, though not recommended, for a 15lb dog who "occasionally" drinks from the pool. They are most likely OK for my 30lb kids who don't activly drink the water. :?: :?:

    how much borax

Hi waterhog & TexasTwister I'm new to all this and just used Borax to add borates to my 15000 gal pool about 10 days ago. After seeking the wisdom of the TFP sages here I used Jason's Pool Calculator to calculate the amounts of Borax & acid that I needed. I added all of my Borax in one go...

    Doing the Borate Thing.....

Hi Folks Just a quick reply to say - borates in. No problems. Will see how it changes the "feel" of the water... when it's warm enough to get in! :-D Thanks for the hand holding!

    Doing the Borate Thing.....

All - Firstly, heartfelt thanks! The depth of knowledge on this forum and willingness to share it so openly never ceases to amaze me and it is genuinely appreciated - Thank you! Some brief responses to the above Jason - You're right, "subjective" is a much better word to use. I knew what I...

    Doing the Borate Thing.....

Folks I have been a BBB convertee for the majority of last season and, being in Texas, have kept my pool open over the winter with no problems (though it took me about 2 months to realize that my SWCG does not produce chlorine below 59F  ). Despite the fact that it's 45F in the pool right...

    pH test kit

Folks - I am a TFT100 user for a good 6 months now. I love almost all of it but often struggle with the small size and slight color differences of the included pH test (Sorry dave! :-D ) I have been using the Pentair 752 kit that came from my PB. I'm running out of both the #2 and #4 reagents...

    Pumps shut off intermittently

Folks I have the Pentair Intellitouch control system with a Pentair whiperflow main pump and Pentair booster pump for the cleaner. I recently adjusted the timer to take the daily running time down from 10 hours to 6. Since then the pumps are intermittently shutting off for about a minute at...

    End of Rookie Season questions

Thanks for all the responses folks. We have a walmart opening here in about 2 weeks time - I'll keep my eyes open for the jumbo sacks of Baking Soda! I was really hoping somebody may also be able to answer my sequestering agent question. Once you started adding the stuff... are you ever able to...

    End of Rookie Season questions

    1) You're right WhisperFlo pump & Intellichlor SWCG. I got them mixed up! I was running 10 hours at 85F so I will try dropping it to 6 hours now the temp is at 64F 2) Thanks 3) I'll keep looking! 4) One of the things that discouraged me from a sequesterant was the cost. Jacks Purple Stuff at...

    End of Rookie Season questions

Howdy folks I’m coming to the end of my first rookie pool season and have racked up a few questions. Apologies for posting in one thread if they all should be in different forums! Question 1 Now that it’s getting colder and my chlorine use has radically dropped I want to reduce my pump...

Newby w/Plaster or Diamond Brite (Quartz)???

Colored Plaster JoTX - I can only tell of my experience. I have colored plaster and like the finish but would lose the color if I were doing it again. I have a slate gray, almost black, plaster and it looked beautiful when new, now it is nearly a year old it is really stained, mostly with...

    Tiny Brown Stains

I finally got around to getting to the local pool store and asked them to run a metals test. No iron, no copper. :? Now I'm worried that I have rebar rusting through my 6 month old plaster in my 6 month old pool! Thing is, these stains are all over the place, not in one loacation...

    Tiny Brown Stains

OK - so that worked. So I have Iron? Don't know where it came from! Do I just treat all the spots and hope they don't come back or do I have to pay throught the nose for a sequestering agent to slowly remove the iron via the filter?

    Tiny Brown Stains

All Over the last week I have noticed some small rust brown stains on/in the plaster of my pool. The plaster is dark, so the stains are not easy to see and the plaster is less than a year old, so is still changing slightly itself. The stains are tiny, less than 1/4" in diameter, round and rust...

    Spa plaster rough

Yeah - I had no joy with the brush but then again I let my scale get so bad I ended up draining and acid washing the pool. Not recommended! If I get a bit of scale now (again it's particularly in the spa) I use pumice to remove it.

    Do my #'s look okay?

Thanks Jason. My TA is falling much slower now but I will let it get as low as 70 before I do anything else. Borates are for next season.... I've just got comfortable with the rest of the chemicals & tests! ;)

    Spa plaster rough

Hi gm It most likely is calcium scale (I've had it and it's nasty). I'd wait for the experts to comment but your numbers are fairly similar to mine (CH, CYA & TA at least) and I'm running at a pH of 7.5 - 7.7 to keep exactly that type of scale away. Using Jason's calc you need to add about...

    Do my #'s look okay?

So, just to close this off... I ran the pool without the features on this week and it about halved the amount of acid I would have usually used to keep the pH in the 7.5-7.7 range. Think I'll keep 'em off for now. Joyce, thanks for the kind words! :-D

Thanks for making that clear [sic] folks! So I do have 0.5CC and way too much FC. (I have the Barry Bond's of SWCGs I guess)
