Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! **RESURRECTED FOR 2025!**

We won't open the pool for another few weeks yet but with all the rain we've had, I had to crack a corner of the cover and get the sump pump in there to start lowering the water. This is shallow end, the basket thing the pump is sitting on is on the bottom so it's not looking too bad. Plenty of...

    Pool closed - pump question

Sorry about that, my confusion! I had to take pictures of the pump itself because there are no labels or anything. I assume by the H its a Hayward but that's all I know.

    Pool closed - pump question

I checked with InYoPools and my warranty expires 11/27/23. I'm wondering if I just submit the photos they want for a replacement claim instead of risking it come Spring when I'm out of warranty. The hubs would have to take it apart to get the pictures of the wiring but oh well.

    Pool closed - pump question

I had the robot running so that helped with circulation and I just crazy at that water with my brush like a giant mixer to get the chlorine stirred around!

    Pool closed - pump question

It's a V-Green 1.65 HP Round Flange 56J Variable Speed Motor that we replaced on our pump May 2022 (not last year). I didn't wait that long - it was probably no more than 30-45 seconds but felt like forever. I tried it twice but I'm so afraid to let the pump run too long without water moving...

    Pool closed - pump question

Yes. I moved the valve to main drain only. The water was well below the skimmer box at this point. But I did not have the pump set to the highest speed when I was trying to do this. It was just on override which I know is not set at max power.

    Pool closed - pump question

Hey guys, I need a sanity check. Pool was closed on Friday and prior to that, I used a small sump pump to drain it down below the returns. I went to turn the pump on to filter using just the main drain so I could have some water movement to add the chemicals but the pump wouldn't prime and...

Please talk to me about pool heaters

We've always joked about getting a pool heater but hubs is seriously thinking about it now. Please tell me where to even start. We have a very simple setup - variable speed pump, sand filter, 1 main drain, 1 skimmer, 2 returns. No spa, SWG, fountains, or anything else. It would have to be a...

Test Results - Party on Saturday

You probably can't get CYA reagent in the next day unless you can get 1-day shipping on Amazon or something but definitely reorder that! If your pool is clear and you can see the bottom of the deepest part for swimmer safety, you FC should be fine for swimming. I know it's nice and hot in...

    What is your routine

I have been woefully lazy with my pool this summer and add a gallon of chlorine every 2 days. I add it in the evening usually. In past years I would test at least 4 times a week and add LC every day

Free Chlorine 0, Combined Chlorine 1.5

Are you using the PoolMath app? That should tell you how much to add based on your numbers and pool size.

    Where do I start??

Don't get discouraged! Main things to do at this point: 1. get a good test kit 2. Read all the stuff in Pool School on SLAM 3. get a good source of liquid chlorine and buy as much as can fit in your trunk! 4. If you don't have a test kit yet, use the PoolMath app to add 5ppm of liquid chlorine...

    Cant get clear

Also don't forget to brush light niches, skimmer box, weir door, remove any ladders and scrub those really well. Any little place that algae can be hiding.

Best way 10ft pool went green while on holiday

depending on how much water it holds, it could count as a seasonal pool. If water is cheap, you could just consider draining it, scrubbing it down, and adding fresh water.

I really don't know what to do...

Hi and welcome! I've been in your shoes - bought a house with a pool and had no clue what the heck we were doing. It's going to feel like you're drinking from a fire hose for a little bit but we can definitely help you. Is it safe to assume your equipment works? Assuming that's all good, the 2...

    Good test results…but turning green

Did you make sure to check all the spots where algae loves to hide so it doesn't resurface? Skimmers, weir doors, light niches, ladders/stairs, etc?

    Liquid chlorine issues

I looked at that date for like 5 minutes trying to make sure I was actually seeing a 2022 date! At 18 months old, that's incredibly weak and who knows how it was stored for those 18 months. In some places, it's getting to be near the end of the season so my stores will stop putting out anything...

Mesh cover vs solid for winter

We have a mesh loop loc cover because that's what came with the house when we bought it! For the 2 years we've opened the pool, it has not been an ugly swamp at opening. I get a lot of worms but they creep in under the sides that don't lay 100% flush against the concrete. As others have...

    Dead Algae Dust

Confirm with OCLT that it's not algae. If it's not maybe it's just dirt/dust/debris/pollen that's blowing into your pool? If it is, try a skimmer sock in your skimmer to help collect it before it even gets to your filter. Sand filters are the slowest to clear and don't get as small of particles...

    Pool store testing

Lots of reason. Employees may not be adequately trained, machines are not calibrated, chemicals used could be expired, instruments not cleaned, etc. Mostly, they offer free testing just to get you in the door then sell you hundreds of dollars worth of potions to "fix" it.

Here's a fun new place to find algae

Or at least new to me. I don't know why I've never looked at the string to my pool thermometer before but I did today for some reason. Ewwww. Just may be one more place to check if you can't find where the algae is hiding...

    Novice pool owner cloudy pool.

Definitely do the OCLT. I know you said you scrubbed the stairs but what about light niches, the weir door, skimmer mouth, and any other possible surface inside the pool? While every 3-4 hours may not be realistic, can you ask them to add bleach more frequently? How is the water being...

    2024 Annual Donation Campaign

DONE! This forum has been incredibly helpful in so many way. We bought a house 3 years ago with both of us knowing absolute 0 about pools. I will never claim to be an expert on pools, just an expert on MY pool thanks to TFP :giggle:
