18 years of Baqua..UPDATE! Swapped 8/15 NOW WITH PHOTOS!

Re: 18 years of Baqua..UPDATE! Swapped 8/15 NOW WITH PHOTOS

Well go figure.....while my daughter has swam in the pool a few times since the conversion was over, the first major party was my 5th grade nephew's birthday party. About 20 kids around 11 years old or so in the pool at any given time......or as we called them "un-desirables".

It was dang nice however to be able to shock the snot out of the pool afterwards and only be out $9 for three jugs of bleach. :) Started with an FC of 7 just before they showed up, was down to a 3 by the time they were done. Darn kids!! Stay out if my clean pool!!

About 7 jugs of bleach.....that's it since we finished the swap. I'm going to hate using chlorine next year. I always used "working on the pool" as an excuse to get out of work around the house. Not going to be able to do that next year. :( We had a TON of rain this last week and it put leaves, leaves, and more leaves into the pool. Cleaned those out and never once had the FC drop below 3.

ps...it's alot clearer than the photo shows. You can pass my "quarter test" where you toss a quarter into the deep end and tell if it's heads or tails with ease.

Pulled out some test strips we had left over....just for ships and giggles. Guess what. :D Still have a reading. Tested with the TF-100 and have readings I'll live with nooooo problem.

FC 4
CC 0
PH 7.6
TA 120
CH 170
CYA 35

Added 4 cups of 10% chlorine......tossed in the vacuum..... and laughed again at the fact we used to use that garbage! Opening this year cost a total of $48 from a green mess to a sparkling blue pool. Thanks once again to everybody who has helped with this swap. It's been a HUGE help keeping the pool running without being there for several hours every day messing with stuff.

Leebo, do you know how accurate strips are for baqua? They might be as bad for baqua as they tend to be for FC, cya, etc.? Hard for me to believe you still have baqua remnants after the conversion and running the rest of last season on chlorine. Are you getting any measurable CC?

Re: 18 years of Baqua..UPDATE! Swapped 8/15 NOW WITH PHOTOS

Just the opposite linen....I've read 0 CC's after the swap the entire time. I pulled the strips out for a project I'm working on and got a few giggles when I saw any reading. There's 0% chance ANY baqua is left....yet as you stated these awesome strips are still reading it. Not worrying at all about baqua....just laughing how amazing these strips are. :)

 I shouldn't post that late at night, since my brain doesn't work well enough even when I am wide awake...I get the joke now  :(

These strips are comical. I just finished my conversion and happened to find a container of these and I too decided to see what they would read. First strip, no Baqua detected. Great! Lets try a second strip, this one (test in a different location) said low Baqua. Who knows how long these strips have been sitting but I can't see these as being accurate.

I still have a bottle of strips too ... I guess I'll have to do some comparative testing just for ha-ha's.

One store salesman told me it would be more economical to use strips ... I think I'll conduct a "litmus test" tonight.

Re: 18 years of Baqua..UPDATE! Swapped 8/15 NOW WITH PHOTOS

As you said in your thread, hottest summer in a longggg time. Kids have been swimming from may 1st on....almost daily. Total bill so far this year for chemicals and DE, $243. It's amazing how much less I've gotta change the de. With baquacil weekly I was changing it, now it's once a month. I too would hate to have seen the cash we would have spent on baquacil, as we also never were able to stay ahead during high heat. I even oferheard my mother-in-law who was 3000% against switching to chlorine say that she was glad we made the switch. Even my sister-in-law who's "allergic to chlorine" had been swimming several times.

Only issue so far, all my Brother-in-laws keep wanting now to use tabs because they're soooo much easier. The neighbor behind them uses them, and they see it as soooo much less work. Of coarse he replaced about 75% of his water this year and already has high CYA. I've had to hear every idea from them, from pucks to the Frog how all are easy to use and how much cheaper they are. My answer to them each time..."didn't they tell you the same thing when you used baquacil?"

Now....off to vacuum the pool again. These darn leaves! THANKS TFP!!!!

I know this pool is your baby....but you could turn it over to them (I know you can't/won't but in theory if you did) with the stipulation that they need to pay out of their pockets for any water changes and also a fee for pool down time...maybe something like $10/hr (24/7) when ever any of the 3 shocking criteria are not met :)

Re: 18 years of Baqua..UPDATE! Swapped 8/15 NOW WITH PHOTOS

They all agree that the pool looks great, but using the BBB method is still "odd" to the majority of people out there. When they see me dumping a gallon every-other-day of bleach in they see $$$$. Most the people they talk to who use pucks say they add "one or two" a week and that's it. Pucks are soooo simple. Then after I talk to them some it turns out shock, algicide, PH up, and so forth are used. By this point however most have quit listening. :)

I'm not worried about messing it up however. As long as it stays clear....it's all good. I would go for a SWG....but I'm trying to get them to replace the deck instead. Who's up for helping?

Re: 18 years of Baqua..UPDATE! Swapped 8/15 NOW WITH PHOTOS

I vote deck before SWG. I'm still not convinced it's any better than bleach. Like it hurt to put bleach in once a day... in any way whatsoever.

I miss it actually. hmmm...

I forgot about the salt and put pool water on my begonias. umm... yeah, they didn't like it one bit. Frame is nice and rusty now at the joints. I don't actually like the taste of the water. shrug...

No kidding. I love mine. I love not having to mess with tabs or jugs which makes it better for me but I don't think the pool cares how it gets its FC fix.

I like the salt on my skin, and the taste doesn't bother me, but I don't like the rust idea. Not sure I have anything to rust but I guess we'll find out. I do get salt residue on my solar cover that I'm not in love with.

You can always go back but I guess the rust is around to stay. Sorry about the posies. My wife would shoot me if I did that.

I like the deck idea though! :goodjob:
