Mine seldom bumps the sides, usually steers itself away. But yes, it will loose debris occasionally when backing up.

I'm on first 24 hours of use (started last night). I'm more than pleased with its performance. I'm a bit of a clean freak with the pool so it was almost daily that I was having to net the pool due to high winds and debris in our area. Will be interested to see the longevity and any quirks that pop up.
