Just opened pool here in New York , 3rd season with mustard algae . Will follow protocols on website but pool guy suggesting change sand in sand filter . Any experience changing sand filter to rid algae . Also is it too early in the season to follow online protocol due to outdoor temps being in 60’s ? Thank you for any thoughts , feedback , suggestions !

Welcome to TFP.

I doubt you have mustard algae.

Most people who think they have mustard algae don’t have mustard algae. Pollen is often mistaken for mustard algae, since it often collects in similar-looking patches. Mustard algae tends to grow on the walls and pool floor on the shaded side. Pollen can look like mustard algae, but it will only settle on the bottom of the pool, not the walls, and appears everywhere, not just on the shaded side. Another way to distinguish between the two is that when you go up to shock level and brush the pool, mustard algae won’t return as long as you stay at shock level. Pollen continues to accumulate, even at shock level.

That said, first you follow the SLAM Process. Then you can raise your FC up to mustard algae levels for 24 hours.

If you have algae returning, you are not maintaining sufficient chlorine levels for your CYA level...

I don't know what the "online protocol" you are asking about is.

Allow the CYA test sample to warm up to room temperature before adding reagent. All other tests are not temperature sensitive.
