Refinishing in ground vinyl over fiberglass pool steps.

I refinished my pool steps while replacing the liner, in 2011, with a 2 part sanded epoxy material I bought through one of the local pool supply stores. The surface of the steps was pitting and cracking and looked pretty crappy at the time. They looked brand new at the time, and for a few years at least afterwards. The material was not cheap - 1 gallon base plus 1 quart activator was something like $200, and it only has a working time of an hour. So you gotta work on it fast. I started at the top and worked my way down into the drained pool.

In the 14 years since, it has probably degraded to not quite the point it was when I refinished it. I.e. some discoloration and a few pitted areas. I should have refinished it when I replaced the liner 6 to 7 years ago, but it was still in pretty good shape at that point. I'll let it go until the next liner replacement, in another year or two. If I could drain the water out of the shallow end without the vinyl liner stretching and tearing at the corners, I would do it before then, but my experience is old vinyl liners go to Crud if you drain the water even for a day or two.

I really appreciate your reply. I am surprised and pleased they looked good for a few years. I have found the Olympic Step Renew kit online that is an epoxy coating for pool step refinishing. I will probably go that route. Next pool will not have fiberglass steps. Thanks again. Bob
What will you put in the steps ?

My steps look like Crud and I need

I have Latham steps in my pool. They are blue, and after about ten years they clearly looked worm, called EcoFinish and was quoted $10000 to do two steps. I called Latham direct to see i they had a solution. Was told to use "

Olympic Pool Paint - Poxolon 2 - Viking Blue" from tech support. While it came out great, initially in year 3 I started noticing Blue on bathing suits after sitting on the steps, and I then rubbed my fingers on the steps and could see blue on them. Since then I re finished the steps again and am now looking at doing them again. I empty pool just at the bottom of the low end step clean really well, let it cure and immediately refill. It has worked for me, but I have to say I wish I never did it.

I am going to refinish them again in about a month, doing the same process but I am planning to add a topcoat of clear gloss as well in the hope of getting more years out of it.
The first time I did it I used their primer as well, but the mistake I made with that was not tinting the primer Viking blue. The primer is whits so if you have white steps you wont have that issue.

I wish my steps looked half as good as yours do right now!

The epoxy paint will take care of those pits that develop rust over time, and I basically popped off the bubbled areas, filling them with the epoxy as I went. It lasts for a number of years, but over time, discolors and starts needing refinishing again.

We need a bathfitter product for pool steps
They quoted me $3500 for a tub and surround in 2005 when labor/materials were still cheap. I can only imagine it'd be cheaper to replace the stairs now.
