Pentair Mastertemp 400-Blank Screen-No Power follow up to MAR 20th, 2012

Pumps are intelliflor variable speed.

What model number?

J20 - connector 2 is the com port not seeing anything in common with the voltage transformer. I am thinking the voltage transformer has to be good since it actuates the pumps and other features.

The transformer puts out three different voltages that power different things on the board.

Some things can work and some things may not.

A malfunctioning device that works can be pulling down the voltage keeping other things from working.

To me it looks like there is some kind of conflict with the com port and manual operations.

That all runs through the board electronic circuitry.

With the com wire from the antenna module on the heater doesn't acutate, with it off the pumps only run a bit then stop.

You have four possible combinations:
  1. pump and antenna connected to J20 - heater replay does not work
  2. Pump only connected to J20 - ???
  3. Antenna only connected to J20 - ??
  4. Nothing connected to J20 - ??
Is it the pump or antenna connection causing the heater relay problem which would point to that device causing the problem.

Or does the heater relay not operate with either of them connected?

I will try taking all the wires off the com port tomorrow and seeing if the pumps run manually. The controller should not require a communications connect to run manually, should it?

Which controller?

The pump should run from its own control panel when the wire is not connected to J20.

I don't have a heater so I'm not versed in their operation (all I know is that the fireman switch is an on/off)... but if your heater relay (K5) isn't closing when the heat is turned on - AND the LED is not being illuminated - I have no idea what could be wrong unless there's a configuration issue with your heat settings.

It's possible that the relay driver that turns the heater relay on and off has failed, but if that were the case I'd expect the LED would still be illuminated. Are any other aux or valve circuits not working?

If you temporarily connect a relay to the EHTR jack and press the heat button (or turn on the spa), does the relay energize?

Ogdento: Heater relay is fine I think as when I disconnect comm cables light turns on and heater gets power. I can then manually turn it on.
AJW: I checked and the 2 cables going to J20 comm connector are a 4 wire from the comm receiver and a 2 heavy wire going directly to the pump. When I take them off this happens:
  1. pump and antenna connected to J20 - heater replay does not work
  2. Pump only connected to J20 - heater works but pump does not turn on even from service mode and manually. I tried it on the pump itself by pushing start button but it would not engage.
  3. Antenna only connected to J20 - Heater works but pumps wont turn on
  4. Nothing connected to J20 - Heater works but no pump even in service mode or manually from pump.
I also reset the Pentair comm connector and that did not seem to make a difference either.

AJW/Ordento: I took this pic of the electronic schematic on the door of my controller cover. it show J20 as just a comm port. Since it says to connect yellow to 2 and green to 3 which BOTH the comm cable and pump cable are connected to could that be an input only port? I would think that J20 is a receiver port since all 4 wires of the comm connector go into it. But if it is a receiver then why does not the pump turn on mannually with it disconnected? If it is an output what signals would it even send to the comm port other than temp or chlorine output from the chlorinator? I found a diagram online that shows J20 pin 1 is +15 v, Pin 2 (yellow)is + data transfer, Pin 3 Green is - data transfer, and pin 4 is gound. Here is the link: https://www.pentair.com/content/dam...nterface-installation-users-guide-english.pdf Since the pump is connected there I am wondering if it needs the +15v to turn it on. Not sure though why without it the pump does not come on at all.

ok guys it is FIXED!!!!!!!!!! I ended up calling Pentair for advice. Basically it turns out I had the pool temperature sensor (small white disk banded to the intake pipe) that a pack rat chewed through the cable on. I spliced it and wrapped it and everything functions normally now. It seems for the heater to turn on from the pentair control pannel it compares the set tempurature in the app or on the display to what it is at and decides if it should turn on. With no temp sensor reading it defaults to 200 degrees or something in their code (you just see a - on the app screen or display) as a safety default so it does not constantly run the heater. The reason it worked in fireman bypass was that once the contrologic cable is off and the jumper is on, it runs on purely the electronics in the heater which has its own intake temperature sensor.

Thanks again for all your help over the 4th. I learned so much from you both and am much less affraid to try and diagnose or deal with electronic issues related to the pool now. Your advice was invaluable in helping me understand how the how system works and where to check what without fear. If I was local would buy you both beers on me. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!! J
