Finally my pool cleared up which I got to see the bottom of the deep end. Why are there two main drains? It looks like the main drain cover is missing. Is this a simple fix buying a cover or do I need to buy a adapter with cover?

Are all circular main drain covers dimensions the same?

Welcome to TFP! Two drains - safety so that a swimmer can't be sucked down and stuck to just one drain. The suction relief will come from the other drain. You want a drain cover for the exposed drain and should be able to find one online or locally. You might find it easier to remove the existing cover and look for any part number markings so you can shop for the same model.

Alright I turned off the pool pump and swam inside to see the main drains. Keep in mind this is the first year we opened the pool when we bought this house last fall. I found a circular rock inside the exposed main drain hole. I cleaned it out which was filled with dead leaves, broken tiles, and the circular rock which was placed on top of two pipes inside the exposed . The exposed main drain had one broken screw hole -maybe that’s why the previous owners put the circular rock b/c they were lazy to put a cover? The other main drain with the cover was just missing one screw. I found the model of the cover is a Hayward SP1048E.

1. Can I buy the screws from Home Depot or are the screws specialized for main drain covers?

2. Was the circular rock for purpose or the previous owners lazy?

I was able to screw in the the missing screw of the first main drain cover. I wasn’t able to screw anything b/c the holes were weathered on the exposed main drain that had a circular rock on top of the pipe and a sideways pipe (possible Hydro-valve with no cap). It looked like the previous owner put some kind of epoxy around the rim of the main drain hole which two screws are attached though are hanging upside down. The exposed main drain is 7 inches depth, top portion of the wall 5 inches width and the top ring with no viable holes is 7 inches width.

Is there a solution like a adapter I can put inside the existing main drain which I can screw inside the adapter to attached it to the existing main drain and have a cover?

Paramount SDX Retro. It comes with an adapter plate and various screws that can use the existing holes in the mounting ring to install.
