I’m seeking a recommendation for a gauge. It is a back mounted setup, but kind of a pain since it faces the fence. Also wondering if there is an option to switch to a bottom mount so it’s easier to read.

Yes. All separate pool pressure gauges are 1/4" MIP thread.

Yep, that's inconvenient.
and I’m assuming gauges need to be installed vertically as designed. In other words, I can’t use a bottom thread gauge installed horizontally to look at it from above.

You can. Or get a 90 deg elbow and put it to the side you took the picture. Be sure it will fit among the plumbing, etc.
