New Pool Owner SLAM Questions

I recently purchased a house that has a pool and when I opened it in April it was green and had a TON of leaves under the cover. I messed with it and finally decided to do the right thing and started SLAM on Saturday morning. Over the weekend I followed the SLAM process very closely and checked FC approx. every 2 hours. When I started my CYA was 60 and my FC was basically zero so I added liquid chlorine to get it up to 24 and kept it fairly close Saturday and Sunday by adding chlorine to keep it at 24. On Saturday night I lost 2 ppm and on Sunday night I lost 7ppm.

I saw a slight improvement in color/clarity on Saturday, but my question is how much improvement should I be seeing? I can't see the bottom in the deep end so have to scoop leaves and brush blind so I'm sure that I'm missing some organic material so that has something to do with the progress and I know that it can take while, but want to make sure that my slow start is not uncommon.

Thanks,
Mark

Each scenario is different, but you can expect it to take several days for sure. If there is still some bulk debris at the bottom that will slow things down considerably. Do the best you can to stir it up. Sweep, brush, and scoop. Good luck!

Oh, and welcome to TFP!

I have kept the FC up and followed the SLAM process, but have not seen much of an improvement in water. My FC barley dropped (less than 1) overnight if that helps troubleshoot.

It occurred to me today at work that maybe i have an issued with the new cartridges I installed on Sunday night so will look at that when I get home and make sure that water isn't bypassing the filters, but any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Before I started I check my CYA multiple times and always got right around 60 so I assume my SLAM level is correct at 24.

Thanks,
Mark

I looked at my cartridges and the bottom manifold may both have been fully seated. After reinstall pressure went up a couple pounds. New to the pool and didn’t know baseline on brand new cartridges. Hopefully looks better in the morning.
