Long time TFP member here and i have never had any issues with my pool since using these methods… I have always had that crystal clear and sparkling water. Well I’m having an issue now and can’t get it figured out. We had a lot of pollen down here in south Texas this year and a lot falling from my neighbors tree into my pool. I was out of town for work for awhile and couldn’t tend to the pool to keep it clean. It never turned green but there was a lot of debris on the bottom. I also Found out my wife used 4 bags of CalHypo shock in the pool while I was away. Kinda my fault I wasn’t specific when I told her to keep the chlorine levels high (I didn’t specify how and the pool store got her) 🤦🏻‍♂️ Long story short I got it all cleaned out and it created a lot of cloudiness in the water so I decided to start a SLAM. I started the SLAM on 4/10 and kept on it hard every hour relentlessly. On 4/13 I passed my OCLT did not lose any chlorine overnight. I still had 0.5 on my CC but figured that passes. My problem is that even after running my pump and filter 24-7 It’s still a little cloudy and I can’t get it crystal clear. Here are my current Readings
FC - 4
CC - 0.5
pH - 7.6
TA - 100
CH - 370
CYA - 30 (Will be raising as soon as it’s ready)
Borates -30

Could the sand in the filter need to be changed? I put new sand 3 years ago. Please let me know if there is anything I’m missing. TIA

Sand in a filter does not need to be changed but may need to be deep cleaned.

It may be worthwhile to open up your sand filter and check the level of the sand and its condition.

Try adding a cup of pool grade DE to the filter to help its filtering.

Sand should never have to be replaced, unless you add flocculant or other pool store magic potion. You mentioned your wife was "pool stored" while you were gone. You sure they only sold her cal hypo?

Shoot - Allen beat me to it, but since I'm halfway through writing here would be my recommendation:

1. Deep clean your sand filter (link below)
2. Run your pool hot. I know you passed the OCLT, but also said you had some CC and obviously your pool is still a bit cloudy. For your CYA, keep FC between 6 and 10 for a week just for insurance.
3. You can add DE to your sand filter to give it a bit of a boost and speed up the sand filter (link below)

Yes I am sure that is all she put in. I did see the receipt to what she purchased. It was a total of 4 1lb bags.

So when you state to run it hot for a week or so. Should I leave the SWG on to assist in keeping the chlorine up? Also am I doing this running the pump 24/7 or just on my normal schedule?

The only time you need to turn off your SWG is when you are adding salt, and when you are doing an OCLT. I would add liquid chlorine (or cal hypo you have on hand) to bump up the FC level then use your SWG to maintain.

I would run 24/7 so you can get more filtering and get your pool back to normal quicker.

Since you need a lot of filtering you should run your pump 24/7 until your water is clear.

Chlorine is chlorine. If your SWG can provide the FC level then let it run. If it cannot then supplement with liquid chlorine.

Well it looks like I might have to start another SLAM. After testing just 5 mins ago looks like my CC jumped up… (Frustrated) 🤪The first test that I posted on original post was just done yesterday at 6:00pm
Here are the numbers from the test I did 5 mins ago…

FC - 3
CC - 1.5
pH - 7.6
TA - 100
CH - 370
CYA - 30

Is another slam on the table or just doing as previous and running hot as mentioned earlier?

Ok so after starting another SLAM at 10:40 this morning and bringing the chlorine back up to 12ppm I have been checking every hour on the hour and I have only put in 17oz which equals to 1ppm from 10:40am to 4:30pm 🤔 am I missing something? Is it because there is not much algae consuming it or it’s almost completely gone? Pool is still a little bit cloudy… I couldn’t see the heads or tails of a quarter if I threw it in there…

It sounds like you will not have a long SLAM, but keep it up until the water is crystal clear, then do the OCLT and CC tests to confirm you can end. As you know, this is the time when people get eager to end the SLAM but you have to be patient and completely kill the algae so you are not messing with it again in a few weeks. Hang in there.

Thanks JJ I think that’s what I did the first time with the OCLT I got to eager and it popped up again… I will make sure to get it all out this time… No matter if it takes an extra day or not!!! Thanks Partner!!!

Probably useless but there's some multipacks of shock powder, one is the chlorine and another looks almost identical and is flocculant. It stumped me why my water was cloudy for a few days til I realized that. Turned the pump off and 12 hours later I had a nice layer too vacuum out to waste. Likely not your issue, though

Update: Thanks to Everyone for your help and suggestions!!! The 2nd SLAM was a success… My pool is back to the sparkling and beautiful state that is was before… All I’ve gotta say is I learned myself a little lesson… I’ve done alot of SLAM’s on several different people’s pools but this was a first so now even if I think my SLAM is over because I passed my OCLT and my CC showed 0.5 I’m gonna keep going just a little more, It definitely won’t hurt but could be the difference… If you read my original post I passed everything but still have a slight little bit of cloudiness… Well lesson learned don’t stop till it is Gleaming!!! I use a good Taylor K2006C Test Kit and was fooled when after testing the next day the CC’s jumped back up to 1.50 Like I said lesson learned and thanks for the support that this community gives everyday people…

I always tell folks that maintaining slam at the end takes little effort and starting over takes lots of effort.

If I ever need to slam again, I'd hold SLAM 2 full days after passing the OCLT.

Congrats RT. :)
