Good morning
I inherited this filter when I bought the house 13 years ago, and I think that I've been "using" it wrong.
My model, as shown in the picture, has 3 aluminum rings that secure the 3 plastic segments. Two of the rings have the nut on them, and one has the black knob. For ease of cleaning, I have always had the black knob on the lowest ring so that I can remove the entire plastic canister to rinse out the base of the filter; the other 2 rings with the nuts obviously stay untouched.

In looking at diagrams of the parts, I've noticed that the black knob is always placed on the middle ring instead of the bottom one like I have it.
Have I been doing this wrong all these years? My thought is that if the bottom 1/3 of the canister stays on the base, the crud and dirt that has accumulated on the base will never come out. By removing the entire plastic canister (all 3 pieces) as I've done, I can hose out any crud that always accumulates on the base.

Your thoughts.

Additionally, I will need to replace my black knob since the thread seems to have worn out, and I've discovered that they aren't cheap. Wow.
Thanks

If it works for you at the bottom, use it that way. That's how they came, but many moved it to a higher position so as to not have to bend so far to open the tank. When they first came out there were 3 of those knobs that came with the filter. The parts were always expensive and then Pentair bought them and they went higher.
Poolweb.com has them for about $11.00. Use a 5/16"-24, fine thread, stainless or brass nut until you get a new one. Its good to use a stainless washer with a nut as well.

Well said
Can you elaborate on the brass nut and washer? I assume that the washer goes first and then the nut?

View attachment 561310 The washer will help the nut and band-clamp from being deformed and allow it to tighten easier.
Right
So, insert the washer into the screw of the band, and then the nut obviously. And that helps with avoiding deformity and tightening??
Ok.
Thank you
