After about 10 years from a replaster, I noticed a number of chips in the plaster. Plus there are some ugly rust stains from putting a 12 foot skeleton in the pool for our haunted house. (It was for a good cause).

Anyway, I decided to drain the pool for the first time in 10 years to patch some of the chips. But when I walked over it, I noticed water coming out. It appears to be hollow underneath. I started to chip some of it out and am concerned that it doesn't end.

Am I in trouble? Any advice?

Yea, you’re in trouble. Without water in it, you may start getting more of that as the plaster dries out.

Looks like you’re up for a replaster. Have them chip it all out this time.

Do you think I could buy a year or two by doing spot repairs? I couldn't really afford a replaster right now even if I could find someone to schedule it in time for the season.

If it’s just one spot you may be able to remove the loose stuff and patch it. The concern would be that as you remove loose plaster you find more and more of it. Give the patch a try and see. Just don’t dilly-dally on it and let the plaster dry out.

Thanks. There are multiple spots, but I don't really have much of a choice. I'm in WA state. The next few days will be sunny and I am going to be keeping the plaster wet while I am cleaning the rust spots, etc. Then we have about a week of rain. I'm hoping to get everything cleaned up over the next week or two then patch and refill. Thanks for your advice.

I’d try and get it done in a couple days if I were you. You may start seeing spalling and crack appear. When I did mine unnoticed things getting worse after a week or so.
