I have a 1 HP Hayward above ground pool pump and a c900 Hayward Star Clear Filter:

Model Numbers and specs see attached pictures. This porta vac is for personal use only. I had this pump just laying around and my Mom was in need of her own portavac. Not the optimum pump for a porta vac but what I read online it could possibly work. So I acquired the filter and cart and put it together. Running a 1’ 1/2” pipe off the suction port, 90° elbow with a down spout to the pool just below the surface it primes and runs.

I understand the dynamics of lift and a self priming in ground pump, I know that is what we need. Is there anything I can do to make this work? 35,000 gallon pool rectangle deep end 7 ft, shallow end 3 ft.. I shortened the vac hose to 20ft, pool length is 40 feet. would I be just better off getting a in ground pump?
Respectfully,

The PowerFlo LX is not self-priming and it will be challenging to prime above water level.

How high is the pump above water level?

Drawing exclusively from the suction line is also going to be problematic as the head loss through the hose is going to be very high and if you are putting water directly back into the pool, the pump will likely cavitate so you will need a throttling valve even if an IG pump is used.

It might be possible but very difficult to do the following:

1) Turn off return side throttling valve
2) Remove pump basket lid
3) Install suction hose into pump
4) Fill hose until pump basket is full - Hose end will need to be kept even with top of pump basket so both are at the same level.
5) Cover pump basket - Second pair of hands would be useful
6) Carefully put hose back into pool without introducing any air into the hose. You should be able to put your hand over the hose end to prevent losing any water.
7) Turn on pump and slowly open return side valve.

A lot of hoops to jump through so it would be much easier to use a self-priming pump.
