Salt Pool Question

I bought this House in 2017, where the person I bought it from had performed ZERO upkeep on the Salt cell or pool components. They actually used a Chlorine Float for the years that they owned the house and used the pool. Now here is my dilemma. I have replaced the pool Liner, pump, the Sand in the Filter, and the IC40 salt cell since I have owned this place. I have an issue with salt "crusties" building up around the bottom and outside of the salt cell and some of the Junctions of the pump casing. Is this normal or okay? I have checked and verified that the o-rings are lubricated and that there is no physical leakage of water coming from the piping. But is there any way to stop and prevent the Salt from building up in these areas?

Are you sure it’s salt? Sounds like scaling to me. Are you testing your own pool? If not, I would get a good test kit as soon as you can -
Test Kits Compared.

Once you get your kit, post your results and let’s take a look at your water chemistry.

Welcome to TFP! Salt cells can scale if the chemistry is out of balance, but you shouldn’t be seeing salt deposits as the salinity is a fraction of ocean water.

Do you have your own test kit?

If not get a test kit, and then load your results here and into the PoolMath app, which will calculate your CSI for you.

What you are seeing may not be salt, it's more likely calcium, if you can get some samples of the material and drop it into muriatic acid, and it foams up, that would confirm calcium.

We can much better serve you if you perform your own water testing a post a complete list of the results. Use the link above to help you get a proper test kit and reliable results.

A good place to start your education in pool school under the "Pool Care Basics"

Here are two articles which may help you with your SWG

If the white materials you see is calcium (scaling) your water chemistry needs to be adjusted. To assist you in balancing your water, PoolMath is a great tool.

If I understand your correctly, it sounds like you're seeing deposits on the outside of the plumbing, is that correct?

Is so, it's most likely calcium and other minerals being left behind after water evaporates. The constant cycle of wetness and evaporation in the same location leads to this buildup. It could be an indication of a small leak in your pool plumbing. Do you have an irrigation sprinkler system that constantly wets the plumbing system? Can you show some photos of the build up?

LF,

There should not be any 'salt' anywhere... I'm not sure about 'calcium' either...

All your plumbing should be dry as a bone, so I am confused..

Show us some pics of the problem areas so we can all be on the same page.

Thanks,

Jim R.
