What did you do to your pool today?

Fired everything up now that the electrical is done. I have a fully functioning pool with everything working! Wow, that feels good to say! One minor hiccup, that was one elbow fitting on my equipment pad that did not get glued in last October (unknowingly) and once the pump primed and cycled through the filter, heater, pipes, boom, off it came, water everywhere! And that's why I didn't want to do the first start up without him. Not a big deal, dried things up, glued the pipe, things are working like a charm!

I will say, wow, how did I miss that when you put water through your plumbing for the first time, all the pvc dust/residue is going to come out like milk and turn your pool into cloudy mess. Filter's on the job though ;)

Vacuumed the pool. I couldn’t get some of the finer debris brushed into the drains, so I pooled out the vacuum, got the hose filled with water after a struggle, and now pool floor is spotless! No more “dust” when brushing.

Man, it’s been one of those years. Seems like every time I turn around, something else is broken. After vacuuming the pool a couple of days ago, it was time to clean the filter, as expected. While I was putting the grids back in, I could hear water gurgling. It was in the plumbing, but the pump was off. I walked around to the spa and it was already down several inches in only a few minutes. I figured it was the check valve and called the pool builder for a service call. While waiting on a call back, I checked out YouTube videos for repairing the valve. It looked easy, so I ran up to Leslie’s to get the flapper/cover. My local store was out of stock, so I had to drive 30 miles to get one. I closed the valve to the spa fountain and the gurgling sound stopped, so I figured I had shut off the water and could take the check valve cover off. To my surprise, water poured out but I was able to quickly get the new cover on. I left the pump off for an hour to make sure the spa held its level, which it did. I was able to cancel the service call, which was a minimum $150. Part only cost $35 and the repair was a success!

I finally got a big girl swg to match my big girl pool ! 😍
It’s been a work in progress as far as looks go - you can read more about it HERE
But It’s running & not leaking! 🤞
Can’t wait to check on it in the morning when the pump comes on - I have my alarm ⏰ set! I think I may need a curtain or something to help hide my eyesore of a hidey hole equipment area 🤔

Heck no! It's a thing of beauty and accomplishment!

It’s running & not leaking!
That's all one can ask for. I'm hoping the same for myself!

I opened the pool last weekend and in the process switched from pipe unions and run of the mill valving to camlock fittings and rebuildable valves.

I also informed my wife that over the winter we will have to budget for a new pool, because we have a lot of top rail rust on this one and some bottom rail rust too (the brown on the walls in the picture is dirt, but I am sure I have rust on the inside of the walls as well)

How old is it?

How old is it?

At least a decade. That is how long I have had this house (that it came with). It is also not installed quite right (the legs are on pieces of shale, not blocks).

I have talked with my neighbors, and the previous owner of this house was not known for high quality purchases or installs. A lot of things were done on the cheap, sometimes with materials purchased from "I know a guy".

10+ years is a good run.
I think an Aurora would look great- (I know you mentioned it as a possibility in another thread)
as for the deck difference you could add some trim to hide the height difference & maybe cut out for the skimmer & build up a square for it so no one steps on it if you can’t/ don’t want to raise your deck/ bury the pool. Or perhaps turn the pool a little to put the skimmer right outside the deck. That’s how mine is. I wanted to be able to deal with the skimmer & the pump at the same time because for instance I often need to turn my pump off to dump the skimmer basket if it’s full or connect the vac.

Yeah, the deck is not going to go up. I am also really in no mood to dig a new pool into the ground. I just built 5 raised planter beds for the garden, which involved moving approximately 4 cubic yards of soil around, and I still have to bring in about a yard of pea gravel to finish it. I am so sick of moving various materials around this yard. I'm not digging a 27' pool about 8" into the ground :)

I will say, having the skimmer and pump where they are is a royal pain. Especially since the stairs to the deck are about 20' to the right of the filter pad in the picture. There are times where I wish I could get to the pump and the skimmer at the same time too. But I think I will keep them where they are, since the plumbing is there, as well as the cut for the skimmer is in the deck, but I do like the idea of boxing in the skimmer, so it does not look totally janky.

I would love to have some sort of remote on the pump that I could use on the deck while I am vacuuming. My pump is controlled by my SWG. I'll have to think what to do. I could plug an Alexa smart plug in there. Not sure how weatherproof those are, and if they can handle a pump startup surge. All things to think about.

There are some wifi plugs with higher amp ratings but most regular ones max out at 10 or 12 amps.
I have a 15 amp outdoor mechanical plug in timer that has 2 outlets so it controls my pump & now my swg. My dolphin is on a little smart plug though- the round kind fits inside my in use 2 gang weatherproof cover. It’s never gotten wet/moist. The dolphin has been on it (in automation mode) since the day I bought it in March of 2021.

I just put two WiFi switches in one of my sheds this weekend. One to control the exterior lights on the shed that cover the patio next to the shed. The other to control the lights IN the shed. After I put that second one it, I was like "when would I ever use this?" but there it is.

I am not sure a smart plug would be the answer either, I don't keep an Alexa on my pool deck, so I would have to use the app to control the pump. When I am working on my pool (cleaning, skimming, etc) I purposely keep my phone AWAY from the pool. I would love to have some sort of remote switch on the deck, but it would somehow have to integrate with my SWCG controller, which is an old school mechanical timer. Or maybe I just suck it up and run around the deck like I do now.

I have an echo dot mounted to the ceiling on my patio to protect it from the weather - it can hear me from in the pool, maybe an option in your case? We just use it for tunes🎶.
For things like my laundry closet, sheds, the dark part of my attic I got those motion sensing 4ft led fixtures- they are awesome. Found em at the Walmart for about $14. They just plug in. You open the door & it comes on! So long as you’re moving it stays on. No app needed. You can switch them to manual if you want. I have been fumbling in the dark laundry closet for 10 years- no more! My attic access is terrible over there & it would be a pain to try & wire a light & a switch in there.

I trimmed my solar cover today. The previous owner didn't do a good job of it. He left about 18" too much cover on the long sides and 2 feet on the ends. During every windy day, I could see the cover billow up in the wind. Also it didn't wind up on the roller nicely since it was too wide. I took the time to trim it to the size of the pool along the waterline.
