Dripping leak at weird metal connection from old raypac heater. What is it?

This just started dripping, next to this metal connection. What is it? Do I need it? Can I just replace with pvc? Gas pool Heater is ancient see pic vid.

That is a cleanout. Can you post a wider view so we can have context (i.e. how this fits into the bigger picture)?
 
That is a DWV test tee with a cleanout. @ajw22 @JamesW @1poolman1 you guys ever seen something like this?

I have no idea except maybe someone wanted to be able to cleanout the line, or pressure test, but both would be really odd.

No. Can I just get a regular plumber to cut this out and replace with pvc? I’m having a hard time getting pool people out this time of year .
Sure, anyone can replace it. Nothing special about “pool people” if you can find a plumber who is willing to fix it.

He probably needs to order the proper PVC stuff. It is often not locally available.

Pool pvc is different than what I can get at the ace hardware store?

I believe that is an old brass check valve.We used to put them on older heaters
