Hi! Hope I am posting this in the right section. We are getting a Jandy Heater/Chiller (we are in Texas-pool will be bath water in July) . Any of my Texas peeps have one? I am struggling if it is worth it? I'm team chiller/heater, husband is not. He'll do it, but I'm having second thoughts.

Part 2: Pool company jumped ahead of the commitment and they dropped off the "pad" . It looks to be a 3 x 5 piece of Styrofoam covered with fiberglass? Bottom of pad is still exposed styrofoam so only the top and sides have the concrete looking fiberglass. Is this okay? Seems to me it won't stand the test of time?

- Thanks in advance!

I had one of those under my old air conditioning unit outside, and after many years it did break down, cave in a little and eventually begin to disintegrate. It didn't happen quickly though. I'd say it must have been 8+ years. Because of that I made a pad of concrete pavers under my pool equipment.

Not in TX, in FL...but we installed a heat/cool pump late last year. I've only had a chance to use heat option so far. The wife loves warm water, basically a giant bath tub year round. My thought was I dont mind warm water when its 80 deg or cooler outside, but when it gets real hot (90+) I like the water to be refreshing. We have full sun exposure over pool, so peak to late summer the water gets much warmer than I prefer so thats when the cooler would take over. The extra expense has to be worth it to you, and what water temp you experence in peak summer and enjoy swiming in. You might not use it much, but its nice to have the option.

For the pad, it sounds like they dropped off a cheaper prefab AC pad. There are different levels of quality. The one under my AC is a "Hurricane Pad", basically light weight concrete over foam and its fine. I needed something larger for the pool euipement so I just made my own pad. Plenty of videos online on how if you have the time and are handy, as another option.

Have you had cause to run the chiller yet? I'm in Central FL in full sun all day and pool water is in the low 90's already... looking at adding a heater/chiller combo and looking for any info on effectiveness!

I don’t have a heater/chiller combo, but have a Glacier chiller. It works great in the Dallas area and there a a number of Houston area members that also have good results. We’ve been right around 100° for the better part of 3 weeks now. My pool maxed at 82° yesterday.

I looked into the combo units several years ago, but ended up with the Glacier. It’s very economical to run, as it uses evaporation to cool the water, so the only electricity consumption is from a fan motor. From what I read, the combo units are more expensive to run - kinda like using an AC system to cool a covered patio. That was 6-7 years ago and things may have changed.

Regardless, I just wanted to let you know about the chiller option, if you weren’t aware. Either way, I understand your situation, as our pool was low- to mid-90s during the summer and we didn’t enjoy it. The chiller is by far the best investment I’ve made in my pool. I love having my pool back and it’s refreshing all summer long!

Thanks for the insight! I Looked into the glaciers, but decided on the combo for the ability to heat as well and have native language integration into the omni panel... I think my small volume pool, 8k gallons-ish and the fact that I just put about 42 Solar panels on the South facing part of the roof will make it a good fit! I will definitely report back after we have it up and running and can see the power draw.

I have a heat/cool HP and it works well for my climate. I like being able to extend the swim season in the spring and fall, as well as chill the water during the peak heat of summer (otherwise my water would be ~92°).
