What is square feet of filter area?

Sq-Ft numbers for filter area is the amount of surface area that the water will flow through if it was spread flat. The larger sq-ft the greater filtering capcity the filter has.

@ajw22 thank you.i am reading @mas985 post "@Hydraulics 101 - Have you lost your head?" which is a masterpiece from mark.

some thing i don't understand is that when it comes to filter sizing chart there is a table that accordingly we choose the filter size based on the pump flow rate per GPM.

For example for a 60 GPM we choose the the minimum filter size with 4.28 sq-ft and the equivalent cartridge filter size is 175 sq-ft based on the table..

as for this example i am wondering how on earth the cartridge filter has a 40 times bigger surface area compared to the equivalent sand filter?

i mean how can it be 40 times bigger?

i have never seen such a big difference in cartridge filter sizes compared to sand filters

A sand filter of 2 foot diameter will have a surface area of 3.14 square feet.

A Pentair CCP520 has 4 cartridges with pleated folds with 130 square feet of surface area for a total of 520 square feet.

A DE 60 filter has 60 square feet of surface area.

+1 ^^

This is the reason why large cartridges like mine only need to be cleaned once per year while small sand filters need cleaning every week. The filter size along with the local environment are the primary factors for how often the filter will need to be cleaned. This is why we generally recommend that you get the largest filter you can afford.
