Hi,

Our brand new concrete pool deck now has 3 cracked skimmers encased in it after just one winter. In November 2021 all 4 auto skimmers (Hayward 1082) we’re replaced, and a week later a large new concrete deck poured around them.
In late August I noticed the ring that supports the strainer basket inside the bucket had gone askew and cracked. See photo. We realized 3 of the skimmers are cracked like this when we were winterizing the pool last week. The buckets of the skimmers are being squeezed, causing the ring to be forced out of position, and cracking.
Why did this happen??!!??!!
The contractor agreed that the skimmers need to be replaced, but is claiming no responsibility for them cracking, and will charge for their replacement. Our contract stated he must conform to Industry Standards and Best Practices. Is 3 out of 4 skimmers cracking after 1 winter Industry Standard?
There is no expansion joint between the auto- skimmer and the concrete it is incased in. Is that OK? When the pool’s deck was poured a week later an expansion joint was made between the concrete that incased the skimmers and the new deck. See pics…is that enough?

I hope the pics help show then progression, although they are not in chronological order.

How encased in concrete are these skimmers? Almost thinking something was placed on top of them to keep them from floating up as concrete was poured around them. Were they okay before the concrete deck was poured? Maybe the soil under the block of concrete the skimmer was encased in settled. I am not a pool builder, but I replaced my skimmers two years ago when doing a reno on my pool. I compacted the ground and back filled with type 57 stone and them a concrete slab was poured that pavers were set on. But I have a steel walled pool with a vinyl liner.

This was before the liner, coping, pavers and concrete were all replaced. Liner was done in the early spring and the coping and decking was done in the late fall.

It is real big of the contractor to agree to replace the skimmers if you pay them to do it.

If they don't know the root cause of why the skimmers cracked why should you expect the second time will turn out better than the first.

What will they do different?

Our contract stated he must conform to Industry Standards and Best Practices. Is 3 out of 4 skimmers cracking after 1 winter Industry Standard?

Let's say it is not normal for one let alone three skimmers to crack within one year. It points to some installation fault.

When the pool’s deck was poured a week later an expansion joint was made between the concrete that incased the skimmers and the new deck.

Show me the expansion joint around the skimmer. I don't see it.

The skimmer Installation Manual is attached to this post.

It looks like you are missing the expansion joint highlighted in pink...
