Jandy “fault processor PEOS” when trying to run on generator.

Testing the ability to run my variable speed pump from a portable 13,000w generator transferring to my electrical panel. This should not be a power issue, but I can’t find the fault explanation or the culprit. Using utility power with only the pool breaker on, the pump works normally. But when running off generator with only the pool breaker on, it shows this PEOS fault.

Welcome to TFP!

I would start with measuring the voltage out of the generator. Looks like it could say PE05, which MIGHT decode to Pump Error 05. Error 5 from the pump is overvoltage. Long shot, but clearly something is different on generator power.

Oh you REALLY don’t want to run a VSP off a generator. The power from a generator is incredibly “dirty”, ie, voltage spikes, non-sine waveform, frequency drift. The pump power supply contains lots of digital electronics in it that needs very clean power or else you can damage the drive controls. Pretty much anything digital should never be run off of a genie. You can buy very fancy emergency generators (ie, they cost A LOT) to run digital equipment but your basic home power generator is really only good for keeping a refrigerator running and a couple of necessary circuits in the house like lights and a stove.

Do any of your other appliances, electronics, etc exhibit issues while on generator power? Wonder if it's a pump issue, generator issue, or a potential issue with your inlet wiring.

FWIW, all non-inverter generators, including the $$$ automatic standby units, produce power that is somewhat "dirtier" than utility power. This can potentially affect anything electronic, especially after extended use, but documented cases of this are rare. Perhaps Jandy pumps are particularly sensitive to power quality. My VSP runs fine on the generator, and I've heard many anecdotes that Pentair VSPs are fine as well.

FWIW, our whole pool setup runs on our Generac 22kw standby genie with no issues. I don’t do it just because I’ve been warned of damage, but it does run our huge heat pump for the house with no issues and it is very sensitive.

Standard generators produce very clean power with one exception. Frequency stability is nowhere close to what the power grid supplies. Since they are just spinning an electric motor, the power produced is pretty good unless you have load changes which require the engine to adjust the throttle setting. Some low-end inverter generators produce power with a lot of harmonics which can be a problem for sensitive electronics.

Thank you all for chiming in so quickly. It’s unfortunate that it won’t work out based on the point of having a generator in the first place. But, I guess I’m glad the controller wouldn’t allow the system to be operated with dirty power and risk damaging something. These pools are certainly a learning curve..
