Aqua clarity and BAC question

I'm in the process of purging and restarting the hot tub and I have a new product I wanted to try - Aqua Clarity. However while reading about the many threads and comments posted in this very educated and informative community I did come across a concern. Aqua Clarity contains BAC and it's arguably a problem for people and the environment. We put chlorine and muriatic acid in our tubs. Those are not great and yet we use them. Is Aqua Clarity a product to be avoided or is it safe?

Hello Happy Bubbles: You are so right. Sanitizers and pH reducers are very serious chemicals to handle and use for recreational water maintenance. When you actually drill-down into active ingredients in any worthwhile chemical you can usually see that if used incorrectly that serious issues can occur. Ahh-Some products do not use pixie dust and just create a lot of hype. Our products work as intended for the job at hand because we use products that are efficacious against biofilms. The amount of BAC you get from the Aqua Clarity after the initial dilution into a gallon container and with further dilution after you add one ounce of the product for each 200 gallons of water leaves extremely low levels in your water. For comparisons you get substantially more BAC in swimming pools when you add certain algicides. BAC is in thousands of products. You could even add the Aqua Clarity in concentrated form, before dilution, and there would be no issues. In my over 53 years in the business I have never heard of anyone having issues with BAC product in recreational water. When you follow directions on any hot tub or pool chemical and always keep them out of children’s reach, you are not going to have any issues.

I purged my spa with ahhsome and rinsed it thoroughly. Done this process many times without issues. Filled and added my dose of liquid chlorine. I have high source water TA and when I had brought it down to 120 I added Aqua Clarity to the fresh water. My spa is 475gal so I added 2oz. Immediately I got soapy foam that did not go away after 24 hours. I purged with AC, drained, rinsed, and refilled again, balanced water and not 100% sure it wasn't something I did wrong, added 2oz of Aqua Clarity and again got the same foam. Waited 24 hours and it was still the same. Purged, drained, rinsed and refilled again. Balanced the water a third time and added 2oz of Aqua Clarity and foaming occurred again. Even with dosing the spa with an anti foam 24 hours later I still have foam.

The foam created by Aqua Clarity is not negligible. It wouldn't be a pleasant experience to have a bubble bath in our spa with friends and family. Gross!

HappyBubbles. With all the purging you have done I suspect you have much residual purge product in the piping. Do not purge and drain again now. Just keep the same water in the tub and skim off foam as you see it build. By tomorrow or Sunday it should be gone. Just to be sure, did you dilute the small 6 ounce bottle of Aqua Clarity into a gallon container with 122 ounces of water? Excess foaming means that your water is probably softer than normal. I guarantee the foaming disappears in short order providing the Aqua Clarity was mixed and diluted before you added it to the tub. Please repost back in a day or so to let me know what is going on.

Hi thanks for replying. Today was day three with fresh water and Aqua Clarity. The foam was still present even though I had added anti foam yesterday.

I purged, rinsed vigorously, drained, and filled again today. It's crystal clear water with CH at 185.

To set up the Aqua Clarity I purchased a 4L jug of water and added the full bottle. Each time I used it I added 60ml.

I don't trust the product anymore at instructed dosages. The first thing I did after filling the spa today was add Aqua Clarity, however not per the instructions. This time I added half the bottle of AC to 10L of water. I dosed the fresh water with 60ml of this dilution and it is fine. Foamier than without AC, but acceptable. I don't know if I will add weekly, but if I do it won't be 60ml. Maybe 30ml and less frequently than weekly. Monthly might be better.

I have had residual foaming from using too much Ahhsome during a purge/subsequent purge - continuing to purge & add more is contributing to the issue.
As mentioned above- increasing ch can help with foaming.
I have a 250 gal tub & use just under 1oz of Aqua Clarity each week - there is a minimal amount of foaming immediately but it subsides very quickly. I suspect you should have waited a day or so after purging before adding AQ.
Add some extra fc & some dirty humans, that should take care of it pretty quickly 😁 You can give your filters a rinse to help as well. Next week go a little lighter on the AQ dose until you find what works for your tub.
In the future, for any subsequent purges you should only use 1/2 a dose or less the 2nd time around.
Adding more Ahhsome to rid your tub of Aqua Clarity is kind of a futile exercise- they are essentially the same product barring some slight differences, AQ is just very diluted. In fact, You can purge your tub with AQ if you wish as listed on the instructions.

HappyBubbles: We do NOT recommend using a poly water or milk bottle for the Aqua Clarity container. Please use a different bottle. Those containers are polyethylene and over time, with changes in air temperature from overnight to daytime if placed outside, the container may collapse and leak. This is caused by what is known as "paneling". Use any heavier 4 litre or gallon bottle that has a #2 in the recycle triangle located on the bottom of the jug. Typically, windshield washer solution, vinegar, or other similar bottles work great. These are typically made of high density polyethylene. I was also thinking about your foaming issue. When you say you added liquid chlorine, are you adding a sodium hypochlorite based product? If your liquid chlorine is not of that product you can have immense amounts of foaming. Please check the label on your liquid chlorine. I just want to be sure. Something is off here. We have never had a similar issue with other users as to what you are describing. If you mixed (diluted) correctly, are adding the correct type of liquid chlorine, the issue must have been the residual surfactants from multiple purges. Hope you removed yiur filter(s) while purging as well. That little bottle may be enough maintenance for your tub for over 2 years At the dose you are using.
