chlorine turns water green?

Hello all, my pool water is measuring perfectly, but adding liquid chlorine is making it green. I assume based on this forum that I had a copper problem, so I drained 1/4 of the pool and added fresh water, but that didn't help. So I got some Regal "Metal out" from the pool store and ran it all day on recirculate. I slowly added chlorine and had perfect and blue water again. Thinking my problem was fixed, I put the sand filter back on filtration, and got a green pool the next day. Do you think that there a problem with my sand in my filter since it appeared ok beforehand? i thought about trying to get the jacks magic product but I didn't want to wait on delivery. I've never had this problem before, and I've been hesitant to add more chlorine if I may have to add another product.

19k gallon rectangle
sta rite sand filter
FC 1.5
CC 0.5
PH 7.2
CYA 50 (added while pool was blue)
vinyl liner

I'm not positive about that before pic - it could be metals. But that after pic is definitely algae. FC at 1.5 is much too low for CYA of 50. Your minimum would be 4 and target 5 or more.

You'll need to eliminate the algae first by performing a SLAM - Shock Level and Maintain. Your SLAM level will be 20 ppm FC. Test and dose liquid chlorine to achieve that level as many times per day as you can. Once the water clears, we can deal with the metals.

I hope you didn't read that here.....copper doesn't turn water green but iron does.

I can't tell positively from the pics whether you have algae or iron

To determine that easily, perform an OCLT and see if you pass that. If you fail that, you know you have algae and should SLAM your pool. If you pass that test, you can be assured that iron is causing your pool to turn green.

Iron will usually turn a pool towards green pretty quickly and dramatically. It coincides with the introduction of a high level of chlorine. If you pass the OCLT, then the treatment to get rid of iron is to do nothing for a few days and it will slowly return your water back to a normal appearance. If you fill from a well, there is a very good chance it is iron.

So do the OCLT tonight and report back tomorrow AM. Please don't add anything to your pool until you finish the OCLT tomorrow AM

yes there are posts on this forum about copper green pools. One linked below. My CYA is high because I just added it after draining off the water. My chlorine is low because I intentionally did not add more since the metal treatments seem to require levels around zero. After having zero chlorine, I believe my algae may have ticked up some since my CC was higher than before. I'll try the iron route, thanks for the guidance.
