I can’t figure out why bubbles are coming from the jet, I see no leaks. I thought it had something to do with the skimmer (which I can’t figure out either) so I took it out and just put the strainer cap back on and I still have bubbles. I’m afraid this is bad for the pump. What else can I check?

Yes I do. I read somewhere that the air intake valve is for aeration and that the bubbles are supposed to be there. Is that true?

SWCG's produce bubbles when they are operating. The easy test is to confirm you are seeing bubbles and that the cell is activated. Then turn it off, or down to 0% and see if the bubbles go away.
The SWCG is the most likely cause of the bubbles, so research that first.
