Trouble Vacuuming

So, I have a vacuum head that goes on a long pole with a hose that can connect to the skimmer hole, or a dedicated cleaning port on the side of my pool.

Sometimes, it works great - i turn the pump up high and the thing has enough suction that it sticks to the walls - which is great because i like to vacuum the sides.

but often, it just doesn't develop much suction - it lifts off the floor, won't stick to the sides...

when i look in the pump, i see that it's not full of water - it is having trouble priming, or staying primed. without the vacuum attached it is fine. Sometimes the pump surges - fills with water then empties...

when this happens my vacuuming is very inefficient - and it's really annoying.

i sense that maybe the hose has trouble permitting enough water to flow - but as i said, sometimes it works fine...

i have tried different pump speeds

any ideas?

jgf,

The two things that I'd want to look at are:

1. Is the filter dirty? Does cleaning the filter fix the problem?

2. Does your pump suck all the water out of your skimmer basket, or does the skimmer basket stay full all the time?

Thanks,

Jim R.

the skimmer is fine - the water level does not get sucked low.

that's why i don't think the filter is the problem - it would affect the skimmer too

also - every now and then i get great suction - without doing anything with the filter...

Can you prop your cleaning port open while running your pump?
yes - i can easily leave it open

it opens and closes by a valve on the manifold near my pump, and does not have any kind of cover at the pool -the port is just a hole with a plastic fitting in the wall of the pool - this is a pretty old pool.

i should probably mention again that i have the same problem if i vacuum by attaching the hose at the opening the under the skimmer basket.
