Liquid Chlorine
Hello, I have a 20x40 inground pool. I use pristine blue as my maintenance. Use liquid chlorine to shock. Water is balanced. I was opening it up, water was clearing up, I put some A+ stain remover in to make liner shine, like I have before. And 30 min later the whole pool was brown. Never happened in 17 yrs I’ve had it. City water, no metals other than what’s in the blue. I can put a chlorine tablet on stain and it goes away, but only to return!!!! Help. Do I shock the Crud out of it and keep chlorine high for about a week? Any suggestions will be great. I thank you very much!

Welcome to TFP! So your situation is interesting. We know the PB is adding copper, but copper doesn't generally change water brown. That happened after the A+ which is a bit odd. In addition, placing a chlorine tablet on a stain with successful results would seem to indicate organic, but then return right away?

However ....... the A+ stain remover MSDS tells us its ascorbic acid. That explains the brown water - iron. AA removes iron. So you appear to have a metals cocktail going on there. With the water brown (angry iron), try placing some polyfill in the skimmer. You might also try a supplemental filter with polyfill like illustrated below. The more iron you get now the better. Try it out and let us know.

Thx, let me add more info. Brought a water sample to pool store and… no iron. They didn’t check for copper because pb has copper. I think water is clear. I think the liner is just now stained brown for whatever reason. I can put chlorine in a sock and attach to my brush pool and it takes the stain or lightens it, I should say. I shocked it with di chlor for 2 days and it was clearing up. I thought I was on my way. But since I really don’t have water balanced for chlorine the chlorine quickly leaves the pool. In a day. Then since the chlorine is gone, the stained liner returned. Can’t figure out how to make it go away permanently. Very very frustrating. I hope someone can help. I really do appreciate your help! And thanks for the welcome!

Before we start chasing our tails, this is where we need to start, A full set of water test results from your TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit. If you don't have one, you really need one. I recommend the TF-100, but either will work. Then post a full set of results. Just like pool store testing is horrible for normal criteria, they are not always good for metals either, especially if chlorine interferes.

While waiting for test results, try the Vitamin C test. It's cheap and easy. If the Vitamin C rubs the stains right off, it's iron no matter what the pool store tells you.

You should also post a pic of the water so we can see it.

Lastly, be sure to update your signature. See mine as an example.

Vitamin c did nothing. Here is a pic with a sock filled with chlorine tablet. And a few of the pool liner. Will buy test kit.

That must be some organic stuff. We'll watch for the kit test results. Enjoy your weekend. :swim:
