DE sand on the returns after opening filter

I wanted to deep clean the DE filter and so I put the mpv to closed and opened the filter drain. I think I also open the pressure guage on top of the filter for a few seconds. This caused a lot of DE to go into the pool from the returns. Is this normal? Should I have the mpv on another setting? I have waste, backwash, close, winterize, filter, rinse.

Is it safe to keep the pump running and manually vacuum to pick up all the DE back up?

I am also worried I haven't been doing any maintenance on my MPV. Maybe that is the issue. It is a pentair and the label part number is 273207 rev h. Maybe I need to open that up and replace orings and lube? Anyone know if there is a kit for maintenance on this? I don't want to open it up without being ready to replace any broken orings.

SD,

Yes... if you break the vacuum everything will just dump back into the pool unless you have valves to keep that from happening. In my case, I shut off both my Intake and Return valves, any time I open the filter.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks for the confirmation! I was really confused because I think I've done this before and it hasn't happened. Maybe I had DE come out before and I didn't notice...

I dont have a shutoff for neither intake or returns. I can disconnect the pump pvc for intake. For return I can set mpv to waste and itll pass to my separation tank and then to the ground. Is that the best I can do?

I always backwash my DE filter before doing a breakdown cleaning. That washes most of the DE away before you even open the filter. Less mess to deal with, since only a bit of the residual DE is left to clean up.

So I set the mpv to waste and I still got a ton of DE in the pool. Maybe last year I did as you mentioned and backwashed before I did a breakdown cleaning. I am going to try that now. But I am pretty upset about this process. I guess I need to install a valve somewhere on the return so that I can solve my issue.
