Just from an education standpoint why have pump on for checking plumbing. Wouldn’t that be helpful for a pressure side leak but on a suction side plumbing leak couldn’t having the pump on mask the issue?

No water is going to be in the suction plumbing past the skimmer to leak out if the pump is not on.
Does your pool water level drop with the pump off?
What makes you believe you have a plumbing leak?
Do the bucket test both ways and see if you get different results.
