This is all new to us, Pool is freeform, around 15000 gals. I quit with the guy doing the weekly checks as he was always in a hurry, never cleaned the pool except a few swipes with the net was mostly only here 3-4 minutes leaving his test strips scattered everywhere. I got a Taylor Technologies Delux poolcare DPD test kit at a local pool store and had them test the water, since then I've bought a lot of chemicals they reccomended and I am a bit overwhelmed.

We have a pool sweep, filtration unit that we need to learn how to open and change or clean filters, whether or not I should use the Phosphate remover I paid 100. a gal for, etc
We need to learn a lot.

Welcome to TFP.
There is plenty of help on the forum. It may be helpful to take some photos of your pool and your equipment pad and post. them. Also write down any model numbers or names of your pump, filter, etc. as that helps to guide you as to what maintenance is needed. Also, do you know if you have any automation to control how you schedule your pump times or turn on/off your cleaner or lights?

The test kit you purchased is a good start. Does it say Taylor K-2005 on it? You may need to add a couple of things to it to get additional test info but glad you made the right decision to stop your pool service as it appears they were not doing much to maintain your pool.

Feel free to ask any question.

LB,

This is a great place to learn all about how to maintain your own pool.. :shark:

You will find that pool stores are there to sell you "stuff" useful or not...

We are here to provide help at no charge and we won't try to sell you anything.

Just float on over to one of our Subject-Orientated Sub-Forums and start asking questions.

Thanks,

Jim R.

The test kit I bought is from Tayor but has Leslie pool name on it as I bought it there. number on it is 18-547. Says inside to go to suretreat.com
I cannot fill in their form as I only have Free and Total chlorine , PH Acid demand and Total alkalinity.
Leslie said from their test last week we needed to raise the TA which I've done, using bicarbonate I bought a large bag of from them, adding stain and scale, and also they say to use the phosphate remover as they were 776 way off the charts and to drain the pool halfway this winter , another guy at another Leslies told me to just drain the entire pool. Also directions on phosphate remover say to backwash the filter, which I do not know how to do.

I searched but cannot find what tests that kit you have includes. Show us a picture of what you have.

I believe litebeam is talking about this one. It is part number 18547 on leslies site.

You are at the right place. No one here will tell you to backwash a filter cartridge. You can remove it and clean it. DE or Sand? yes. Filter cartridge?

For the enjoyment of us readers, can you post Leslie's test results? Even if you could trust their results (which many of us here have done A/B comparisons and found them very unreliable) I am curious as to why they would suggest a water replacement. Most likely it is related to CYA which I don't see mentioned.

Are you having any issues? or just trying to get a handle on DIY for a seemingly healthy pool?

I would be wary of the phosphate test results. Therefore I would not use any phosphate remover at this time. Not sure why they said to drain 1/2 or all the pool. I would not do that either.
Others have given you links to upgrade your kit to get the proper tests done. While many don’t like to see Leslie test results, if that is all you have, it might be helpful to provide the actual data so we can try to determine why they are recommending certain things such as draining the pool or raising TA.

I would like to know where to purchase items to as to the test kit I already bought at Leslies to test for Calcium Hardness and CYA?
Your current kit allows you test for TA and pH. You may want to start with that and post results until you obtain the reagents to test for CH, CYA and a proper FC/CC. It would also be helpful to post results for your tap water that is used to fill the pool. That informs you what is being added and helpful to understand what is affecting your pool water chemistry.

Also, list your equipment in your signature such as type of pump, filter, volume of pool, etc. Go under settings then to signature to update. Thanks.
